Mooncups cause prolapse?

Didn't realise this. Argh, they are so much better than tampons to use. Thought would share to make others aware too- seems it is about how you use them perhaps.

I can see that if you're at higher risk of prolapse they're maybe not ideal, but I love mine and, balanced against the environmental impact and TSS risk of tampons, I'll be sticking with the mooncup. But you absolutely have to 'pinch' it and break the seal before you take it out. The thought of women just dragging it out without doing that is making me go hot and cold. Confused
Plus I find I hardly get cramps since switching to it, to the extent that I have to actively remind myself I'm on my period and to take it out and rinse at night!
Some pps have mentioned taking them out in public toilets being messy. If you have very heavy periods that might be necessary, but I just rinse and reinsert at home morning and night. The toxic shock risk is so low as the blood is held away from your vagina in the cup - the 4 hour tampon rule doesn't apply.

If you watch the physio video the issue seems to be with people taking them out without breaking the seal (not sure how they even manage that and can imagine it would be very uncomfortable). If you take them out the normal way I can't imagine there would be a problem. Some health professionals do seem to be skeptical. My gynecologist blamed mine on my coil coming out. The fact that I felt it being expelled (severe cramps like when i had a miscarriage) couldn't convince him otherwise Hmm.

I’m not worried about this. It shouldn’t be creating a proper seal, there are holes in them.

This seems to stem from one woman thinking it might have been the reason she had a mini prolapse.

DuLANGDuLANGDuLANG · 11/03/2020 12:25

I know someone who accidentally sucked her coil out with a menstrual cup Shock

TerrorWig · 11/03/2020 12:35

How?!

DuLANGDuLANGDuLANG · 11/03/2020 12:48

She’s not really sure, she was drunk and didn’t break the vacuum seal properly, I guess?

It definitely happened though, I’ve seen a photo of the coil in her hand 😬

A google search brings up quite a few anecdotes but it’s apparently rare enough that having one shouldn’t stop you using the other, just be more careful and make sure you check your coil strings after your period?

It would be interesting to see who supplied the press release that this article has cribbed the information from.

@hula008 apologies, I didn't see it. Sorry to upset you so badly. Sorry, sorry to LITERALLY upset you so badly

This appears to be a reliable source re: ‘involuntary expulsion’ of IUDs and menstrual cups.

The BBC story looks pretty weak and sketchy to me. I also know someone IRL who claims that a mooncup caused her prolapse after a few months of use.

Her doctor doesn't blame the mooncup, and told her that prolapse is fairly common after vaginal births and with increasing age.

She has actually also been obese for most of her adult life, before, during and after pregnancy. Obesity is definitely associated with a higher risk of prolapse.

Still, she remains convinced it was the mooncup and none of the above.

TheOrigBrave · 11/03/2020 15:41

If anything, my mooncup seems to help with my stress incontinence

That's an entirely different issue to the withdrawal of a mooncup increasing risk of a prolapse.

When inserted, a cup does apply pressure to the urethra (or something) which helps with stress incontinence.

Just wanted to share this tweet with you all from the comedian formerly known as Joe Lycett.

Mooncups cause prolapse?

I don't get it Strictly

I've not RTFT but here is my anecdote...
I loved my cup, never even had to bear down, a quick flick, seal broken, happy days.
Until I felt my cervix pretty much at the entrance to my vagina one day. Confused
It went back to where it should be the next day. It was fucking terrifying though.

Persistence, and being as careful as possible resulted in my coil hanging out.
I had to retire it and go back to tampons. I was pretty devastated because it helped so much.
I believe this article to be correct and more research is needed.

No kids, late 30s at the time of this.
