To ask if you would ever wear a non-wedding ring on your 'wedding' finger?

I'm not married and I don't like rings on my middle finger as I find them uncomfortable. I already have a ring for my right hand 4th finger, but am looking to buy another for a different finger. I wonder how many of you would wear a ring on your left hand 4th finger if you're not married? I know this sounds ridiculous , but I'm wondering whether it's normal these days, or whether I will start to get questions on whether I'm engaged/married!

YANBU - Yes I would wear a non-wedding ring on my wedding finger
YABU - I wouldn't

I do all the time.

MovinOnUp · 10/03/2020 16:13

I used to when I was young and gorgeous, To (try and) stop getting chatted up.
No need for that kind of subterfuge nowadays :)

ilovedjerrymore · 10/03/2020 16:20

I have worn a ring on that finger since I was a teenager! The last 10 years I have a family ring on that finger. Not married and no partner either. It’s just a finger. Grin

fridgegrazer · 10/03/2020 16:28

I sold my wedding ring when I got divorced and my engagement ring broke and I have now sold that too. I will never marry again but I now wear a signet ring my grandmother gave me on my wedding finger - it is the only ring I wear. Nobody has assumed I'm engaged or remarried but maybe that's because of my age.

Wear what you like where you like it!

lulufufu · 10/03/2020 17:30

I don't generally wear my wedding ring/engagement ring anymore. Still very much married! Do often wear costume rings on that finger. Do what you like!

Intruiged · 10/03/2020 17:41

Why not? I don't think I've ever noticed what finger a ring is on, I doubt many do. And I care even less if strangers are married or engaged, if they are close to me I'd know anyway.

FloraGreysteel · 10/03/2020 18:10

It's just a finger. I don't even know which one it is, and I'm 53 (none of my friends are married). So I would.

Notadramallama · 10/03/2020 18:15

I do (I'm divorced) only one person's ever asked me about it. I wear my rings on the finger that they fit and I don't care if people think I'm engaged/married.

LilyJade · 10/03/2020 19:24

I've had foreign men assume I'm married because I wore a ring on my right hand for a while.

I don't wear any rings at present, don't want any eligible men I may meet to think I'm married or engaged and therefore decide not to talk to me.... sad I know but I'm just so sick of being single!!

Locally if you aren't married/ engaged & put a ring on your left hand ring finger it's seen as bad luck!!
You have to turn the ring round 3 times before taking it off iirc. Or you will never marry & be doomed to be a spinster forever!!

MakeItRain · 10/03/2020 19:31

Yes I wear rings on that finger and I'm divorced. No one has ever commented. I think it's really strange to think it's important!

SimonJT · 10/03/2020 19:37

My engagement broke off just over three years ago now, I still wear my engagement ring as I like it. If I do get married I’ll still wear it and I can just call it a wedding ring.

RickOShay · 10/03/2020 19:44

Yes I would. I’m married but my wedding ring is too small now Grin, so I wear an eternity ring. I didn’t wear a wedding ring for years actually.

mathanxiety · 10/03/2020 19:45

I had this discussion with my mum in 1983. Actually it was a blazing row. Her contention was that the ring finger was sacrosanct and should never be sullied by an ordinary decorative ring. I still can't understand that pov.

SwedishEdith · 10/03/2020 19:49

I can't believe this is even a question Grin

honeyloops · 10/03/2020 19:50

I'm surprised by the answers here! I wear a ring on that finger - it's got sentimental value but was very cheap, silver and mother of pearl, and doesn't look like an engagement ring (although maybe at a glance from far away, at a squint). Nobody has ever asked about my 'engagement' ring or assumed I'm engaged in conversation, so I say go for it!

Lalallama · 10/03/2020 19:56

I do and nobody has ever asked me about it (although having read this thread maybe they were having mean thoughts about me Hmm)

Although I also have rings on that finger on my right hand and someone asked if they were wedding rings that I wore on that hand because I'm left handed. Confused

myrtleWilson · 10/03/2020 20:01

I'm the opposite - am married but wear my wedding ring on my right hand 'wedding ring' finger rather than left as it has always felt more comfortable on that finger. So, I'd be completely fine reversing it!

Andahelterskelterroundmylittle · 10/03/2020 20:04

Am I in 1952 ? How is this even a question ? Wear whatever you want , where ever you want.. do it! Deliberately... just do it

MolyHolyGuacamole · 10/03/2020 20:06

I do

batsBATSbatsBATSbats · 10/03/2020 20:13

Only one friend of mine has ever commented on me wearing a ring on that finger. And she's sort of very cosy with her husband and lots of kids and is really into all that sort of romantic stuff (not that I'm not into Romance but I don't assume people are married like that).

My fingers swell up, it's not always possible for me not to use that finger. And I also sometimes wear one because of wanting to seem unavailable in some situations.

buckeejit · 10/03/2020 20:23

Absolutely. Always have done & still do even though I'm married now

Notonmyshift · 10/03/2020 21:05

I do all the time.
I've never been married and rarely wear my engagement ring but I have several rings I wear on that finger.

Syrinx89 · 11/03/2020 06:53

Thanks everyone... More than half of you would go for it! I think you're right... The ring in question has a sort of celtic design and doesn't look remotely wedding/engagement-y, so I think I might be safe. I don't really care what people think but the thought of being asked every time someone spots it is irritating. I might just see how it goes!
