My 3 year old has got a fever. Again. He gets better for about 3-4 days then he starts getting poorly again. Nose streaming like a tap and saying his ear hurts. He's burning hot and I have to administer Nurofen on a daily basis to keep his temp down. He started to school (in Wales they go pre nursery) just over a month ago and since he's been going he has been getting cold after cold, fever after fever and also had sickness and diarrhoea. He's had an ear infection as well plus a throat infection and many other viral illnesses. He went nursery since 1 years old and he also got every illness going including HFM twice so I thought he'd be over it now and immune system will have build up. Clearly not! Why is it he gets a fever when he has cold like symptoms? He has multivitamins daily. Plenty of fruit and veg. What the fuck can I do? I'm missing so much time off work as it is and I only started 2 months ago. Understandably, they have already given me a verbal warning. How can I provide for us if I lose my job? I have bills to pay. There's no family support whatsoever. Not even a neighbour. I moved away from it all.. very long story but I'm just getting so sick and tired of it.

It does get better as they get older in my experience. My son sounded similar, he caught everything going at pre-school. Then he caught most things going once he started school, but now he's catching less of the worse bugs going around. Although poor thing has a constant cough this winter.

Same here until my two youngest got older. I missed so much work that my manager, who used to say 'their health comes first' stopped saying it and started saying wearily 'how many days?' Big hugs and I'm so sorry but you'll get to the day where you'll say to others 'oh god I remember those days, we haven't been to the doctors for ages!' FlowersBrew

Thank you. I know it won't last forever but just right now I am feeling stressed and tired. He wakes twice. He stays awake and whinges and cries and ultimately doesn't sleep until gone midnight. Then he fidgets, cries and gets up about 4 and I have to be up for work at 6. So I am shattered. I have to drive 40 miles a day as well so I really need to be alert.

Might be worth having him in your bed until he's better? Would he sleep better with you, do you think?

GilbertMarkham · 09/03/2020 23:13

Why is it he gets a fever when he has cold like symptoms?

My cousin's child regularly got a fever with a cold etc. They grew out of it. It's certainly stressful until they do..

How many hours are you compelled to week before affecting benefits : 16 or 25?

Could you reduce your hours or get a different job with lower hours to meet that.

Could you get by on that?

I think you can do less than the 16/25 hrs of the money earned is the same of more than 16/25 hrs at minimum wage. Worth checking that with CAB.

GilbertMarkham · 09/03/2020 23:18

Is there absolutely nothing closer work-wise? (Probably a stupid question). Or could you move closer to work if there's nothing (family etc) trying you to where you're living.

I remember this: a year of random illnesses culminating in 3 weeks off with chicken pox! I pulled every trick in the book to be off with them as there wasn't anyone else. Fortunately I had a fairly understanding boss who was a single mum who let me wfh in the evenings to catch up, but I was bone-tired.

They've rarely been off since then if that's any consolation. Have you spoken to work about it? Can they be flexible at all?

GilbertMarkham · 09/03/2020 23:23

Understandably, they have already given me a verbal warning.

Can they do that when you're having to take off to look after a sick child as a single parent?! Another question for CAB maybe.

Zombiemum1946 · 09/03/2020 23:26

Could father take turns ? My youngest was ill every few weeks and my work said I should take turns with my husband, after a fair bit of argument he did and does share now. I was also asked if my family members could look after her, I said I'm sure they would but as most of them are dead it's not possible. I was also asked if a neighbour could take her !!!! Dc got much better after she turned 5, now she's the healthiest one in the house.

Zombiemum1946 · 09/03/2020 23:41

Sorry I didn't see that you're a single mum. If he seems to have persistent sore ear and streaming nose, try to get dc seen by E.N.T. Mucus can get trapped behind the eardrum causing a lot of pain until the drum bursts. When the infection is behind the eardrum oral antibiotics can help. Azithromycin was the one my dc was given and it was the only one that worked. Obviously the doc is the best one to advise and antibiotics don't work with a virus, but at least it's a route to try.

InArrears · 09/03/2020 23:45

Sorry, I didn't see that they have given you a verbal warning. Are you in a union? What is you role at work?

Zombiemum1946 · 09/03/2020 23:46

I should add that it's the mucus that develops into a bacterial infection due to being trapped behind the ear drum but the initial illness is viral. How dc is better soon.
