Am I overthinking this?

I've just come back from a GD appointment with the diabetes midwife who then took me in for a one-off monitoring scan. I am 29weeks + 2 days and have just been told that baby's tummy is measuring in the 5th percentile. I was devastated hearing it!!! Has anyone here had a similar experience and went to have a perfectly weighing normal baby? I need some positive energy. This is my first baby and I wanted everything to be perfect :(

But what is the rest of your baby measuring?
5th centile means absolutely nothing if I don’t know the rest

Winterwoollies · 09/03/2020 16:23

The first to the 99th centile are all normal. All variations of normal.

You haven’t really told us anything as the tummy is normal, low down in the chart but normal and not having this info in relation to anything else is meaningless.

My baby has a middle of the road head and tummy but his limb length is the second centile. No one is worried as it’s all NORMAL and he’s progressing and so I’m not worried.

I don’t really understand what you’re devastated about?!

RedSheep73 · 09/03/2020 16:35

You are overthinking this. Did they tell you anything was wrong? No. So stop worrying. When the sonographer calls for a second opinion, then takes you in a separate room with a box of tissues, then there's something to worry about,

Merryoldgoat · 09/03/2020 16:36

Like the above said, what does this mean? If it were a problem she’d have explained why, surely?

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 09/03/2020 16:37

Why do you thinn that means there's something wrong? Why are you devistated? Did they tell you something was wrong?

Ponoka7 · 09/03/2020 17:18

"This is my first baby and I wanted everything to be perfect"

I think you need to drop that, you get what you're given and have got to get on with it.

I don’t think that is anything to be worried about unless your MW expressed concern? My twins are 2yo and only started measuring on the 9th centile in the past few months. They were tiny babies and premature - one was 920g at birth and the other 890g (there were issues throughout my pregnancy though) - until they hit 1yo they didn’t even measure on the 1st centile (right at the bottom) they were very far down from the centiles in general. But they grew well and at a good pace - they’re a little delayed developmentally but size wise they’re not too different to their peers now so I wouldn’t worry if I were you OP Smile

Hi I'm a type one and my babies abdomen was larger at one point but it all evened out he was 9lb 3 when born don't worry if you are told your results are normal you are being monitored closely if they were worried the would have you in for extra scans take care keep your sugars in check and try not to stress (it raises your blood sugars )

Lolalovesmarmite · 09/03/2020 19:46

I had GD and my baby measured very small from about 30 weeks onwards (around 5th centile). It was horrifically stressful as every time I went for a growth scan or any kind of appointment they found something else that could be an issue. In the end it turned out there was nothing wrong at all. She was just a dinky baby. She’s now a small, slight but very healthy and robust two year old. I’m average height, my husband is tall so we didn’t expect a teeny child but that’s what we got. Some children are small, chances are there’s nothing wrong at all.

skyblu · 09/03/2020 19:47

I was told my baby was very small and if I drank a glass of milk every day then he might just be lucky to make 5lbs.
He was actually 7lb when born and perfectly healthy in every way! Always has been and is a strapping 18yr old now.
Try not to worry!

Thanks everyone for your comments. Sorry I didn't provide more detail. Baby's femur and abdomen are both in 5th centile while head is in the 50 centile group.
I have been diagnosed with GD recently and they have called me in for more scans to monitor the baby's growth.
I am panicking because the midwife told me I might be need to deliver baby early and keep the baby in NiCU along with steroids to support lung functioning. It has all been a lot to take consider I was okay until a few weeks ago.
I am eating healthy now and monitoring blood sugars. Not sure what else I can do but I really want to give the baby the best possible environment and would try whatever I can for a full term baby
