To Hate Charities Collecting in Shops, In the Street or On Your Doorstep?

I am all for charities & the excellent work that a lot of them do but it’s so annoying when representatives try to stop you whilst you’re shopping or even worse, call at your home when you have better things to do? I don’t like being phoned either. This morning 2 guys from Scope tried to attract my attention as I entered a local grocery store but I said I hadn’t got time to stop, which was true. One of them called after me again as I was leaving! I understand they have to try to sign people up but does it need to be this invasive?

And a pittance of what they raise will be given to the charity. Most of the DD goes to the chugger/company

Soapytoad · 09/03/2020 14:41

I don’t like this either. Some people can be so pushy. I believe their volunteers aren’t supposed to be direct, but they do seem to ignore that at times.

I actually volunteer now but not in a bucket shaking capacity. It’s given me the confidence to ignore those types, guilt free. It’s very liberating!

SageRosemary · 09/03/2020 14:43

I don't mind volunteers shaking a bucket on the street, or bag packers, (even though I prefer to pack my own bags) or church gate collections (even though I think non-church goers seem to get off lightly here!). I'll support cake sales and sponsored walks.

I abhor the guys on commission who try to get you to sign up to a direct debit. Like, why would you ever hand over your bank details to a complete stranger in a public place? Saying no the first time was difficult, now it doesn't cost me a thought. Cold-calling at your home should be banned outright.

Tyersal · 09/03/2020 15:01

The ones that want to pack your bags at the supermarket about me

SerenDippitty · 09/03/2020 15:04

We have a small co-op around the corner. They often let chuggers work in there just by the door. The shop is as I said small. You can’t go in without making eye contact and being accosted.

PumpkinP · 09/03/2020 15:05

I really hate them. There are loads of my high street and they are really forceful. Will shout at you from across the street. “HI SUPERMUM” is one I get often Angry so embarrassing.

MrsDrudge · 09/03/2020 15:07

YANBU - the ones who approach for bank details can be very pushy - trying to earn their commission I guess.
I don’t mind the chuggers outside supermarkets etc as long as they aren’t too aggressive.

Eddie16 · 09/03/2020 15:07

I always lie and say I already donate to whatever charity they are representing.
I do donate to charity but only the ones I care about not someone who wants my bank details while standing in a store or on a street corner. I'm not giving it out at home either, its my home and sanctuary and not at 9pm when you wake my daughter with all the doorbell ringing!
I think its wrong to make people feel like they cant go about their business without being hassled to listen to someone asking you how you feel about dogs trust and the work they do etc.

Frothybothie · 09/03/2020 15:21

I wonder what would ahppen if you filled out a direct debit with a made up sort code and account number and a made up name.....

SentimentalKiller · 09/03/2020 15:25

YANBU
I like Morrisons but rarely shop there because the chuggers are annoying and in your face
I hate chuggers and have no faith in the big charities. By middle class men, for middle class men

Fannia · 09/03/2020 15:28

I don't mind chuggers, it always makes me think of little Karen on outnumbered demanding to know if they get any of the money.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 09/03/2020 15:31

I don't know anyone who likes these.

I entered my street once as chuggers were doing rounds and just loitered til they'd gone.

😂

I do wonder about all the large high street charities

I worked for one such charity in their shop - it didn't make much money and was basically just about covering the running costs, I couldn't see what money if ANY went to the people it was meant to help. Confused

CandyflossKid · 09/03/2020 15:50

Matalan used to be the worst - you couldnt leave without being accosted in the doorway with a collection tin being shaken in your face! If I want to donate I will but I always found this really rude and I intrusive.
The charity collectors haven't been there for a while though so hopefully it has stopped.

Thirtyrock39 · 09/03/2020 15:52

When we used to get a lot knocking on the door I often signed up then cancelled the payment as soon as they'd gone- totally spineless I know! Now I have a sign on the door and swerve the stands in the shops. It must be a thankless job though so I do feel a bit sorry for the chuggers

Devlesko · 09/03/2020 15:55

It does the charities no good imo.
When they used to shake buckets people would put money in, who wants to set up a dd.
I don't like pushiness but if they don't push they're paid a pittance.
Such a shame they have to do it, it must be even worse when you don't agree with their policies.
Don't take the job they stop your UC, I'm always nice to them.

DreamingofSunshine · 09/03/2020 16:39

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit I used to work for some of the big charities. The argument was that having a high street presence helped with awareness, both of the charity and those needing the services of that charity. It also created a way for people to support a charity by volunteering or donating items rather than giving money.

I can't stand chuggers but the sign up rate was surprisingly effective, so it must be working somewhere.

redwoodmazza · 09/03/2020 16:49

They aren't allowed to shake the collecting tins anymore, are they?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/03/2020 17:21

Matalan used to be the worst - you couldnt leave without being accosted in the doorway

It's W H Smith round here. I'm surprised they bother since hardly anyone goes in there, but they've taken to actually blocking the exit with an outstretched hand to shake and a big grin

I just stand there, gaze at them and say precisely nothing ...

Tyersal · 09/03/2020 19:37

@redwoodmazza no, I occasionally tin shake for cats protection and no shaking or accosting is allowed

coolwalking · 09/03/2020 19:40

whats a chugger? sorry!

chocolatespiders · 09/03/2020 19:41

I have signed up before so they get the fee and then cancel direct debit after one payment.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 09/03/2020 19:48

I dodged a chugger today

I avoided a charity employee about to mug me by exploiting my emotions and goodwill whilst shopping

Charity Mugger

Hippee · 09/03/2020 19:55

I just say "I have decided on my charity giving for this year". It is true, and seems to work okay.

DaisyintheCloud · 09/03/2020 19:59

Im personally aware of a good number of cases of people fraudulently posing as charity collectors - both the high street tin shakers, and the door to door direct debit takers - my thinking on this is probably skewed by that experience but... I never understand why anyone would choose to donate this way rather than online, via a trusted secure website?
