to give my twins rhyming names?

Before I knew it was twins, DH and I were debating between our two current favourite names... names which happen to rhyme with one another.

WWBU to use them both anyway?

(Both names are unisex, as is very common in his culture... so the question applies regardless of sex. His culture has a broadly similar-ish range of attitudes to rhyming twins as in the UK... so they'd be equally likely to be teased there as here.)

Came on to say there are enough names in the world for you not to do this but as you hopefully have acknowledged.....

leghairdontcare · 09/03/2020 13:37

Would you consider going for Balonz and Tralonz?

@ZorbaTheHoarder I can see why the OP would gravitate toward a name as strong as Balonz but think of the twin that would be lumbered with, clearly made up name, Tralonz.

InsomCho · 09/03/2020 13:37

I think it's ok however if you want to use one as dt1's first name and the other as dt2's middle name.

thereisfreedomwithin · 09/03/2020 13:40

never mind OP, you have brightened up our day. In fact I nominate this for classics :)

LapsedVeganAcademic · 09/03/2020 13:43

Can someone explain to me this Balonz/Tranlonz thing? Am missing the joke Smile

Oh well if you're not going to use them, OP, you can tell us what the names were.

inwood · 09/03/2020 13:47

Please don't.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 09/03/2020 13:48

OP Balonz is from an MN Classics thread where a mum to be seriously pondered calling her boy Sean or another traditional name, Balonz.

My twins are 2 and B/G, so obviously non-ID. They are also really different -- DD is a small, fierce brunette and DS is gingery, giggly, and given to melodrama. They also have different names, starting with different letters, non-rhyming, and not obviously a 'set'.

It emerged recently at nursery that ALL the children call them both 'DDName'. And DS answers happily to being called 'DDName' even though he does know his own name (although he calls himself either 'Young Man' or 'Fishy', go figure).

Anyhow, my point is, it's very easy for people to get twins mixed up so you really do want to give them distinct names.

LapsedVeganAcademic · 09/03/2020 13:48

@PickwickThePlockingDodo But I will use one of them. So no, not telling. Besides, both are from a language and culture that has very few UK members - so it would utterly out me.

Yes - you need to find a different name...

Effinfamily · 09/03/2020 13:54

Names beginning with the same letter is better.

Examples

Archie and Albert

I hope the OP learns all her letters before the babies arrive.

Neverender · 09/03/2020 13:54

Phil and Lil - nope!

RandomLondoner · 09/03/2020 13:55

I know twins, boy and girl, with rhyming single syllable names Both names are unusual, but nice. I really like their names.

izzywizzygood · 09/03/2020 13:56

I think it's a great idea! Quite sweet!

RandomLondoner · 09/03/2020 13:57

The bits of the names that rhyme are spelled completely differently, zero letters in common.

SinkGirl · 09/03/2020 14:01

My twins have names that start with the same letter but are different lengths and sound completely different. Even that causes enough trouble. It wasn’t a deliberate choice but they were the only two names we liked. DH’s name also starts with the same letter - in my panic naming state, this didn’t even occur to me (it was a tough time, don’t judge me). I’m sure people think we are weird.

My friend has ID twins with very different names. Even then, at preschool the teachers cocked up their learning journals and had written things in the wrong twin’s book. The teacher complained that they wer always pretending to be the other twin for a joke and my friend explained that this would never happen as they hate being called the wrong name. Basically the teacher was getting confused and assuming she was right rather than listening to the boys. Nightmare.

Having twins is challenging as it is, don’t make it any worse!

I do know twins called Mia and Maya though 😬

ZorbaTheHoarder · 09/03/2020 14:01

@leghairdontcare I'm actually quite offended that you claim Tralonz is a made-up name, as at least 3 of my first cousins (male, female and other) are called that.

Let's have a bit of respect for different cultural traditions, here, people!

SecretWitch · 09/03/2020 14:04

Twins at school are named Derek and Eric. They have become Dirk and Irk by classmates.

BacklashStarts · 09/03/2020 14:10

Yeah I think separate names which don’t rhyme, have same first letter, have same meaning, etc are better. They are 2 separate people.

Thinkingabout1t · 09/03/2020 14:14

You're a good mum, taking the trouble to think it through and ask advice before risking a wrong move. Percival and Clementine will thank you when they're older ;)

I met identical twin girls a while ago called "anna" and "arna " (as in frozen)
I did not see the names spellings, but we were chatting at a play place.
They could have been Anna and Anna spellings but not pronounced the same?

Marylou62 · 09/03/2020 14:17

A very long time ago and not in this country I met a Sam, Samah and Samareh..all siblings..

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 09/03/2020 14:21

I think it would be a really bad idea. They will have enough aggro in life being confused/compared with one another. Don’t put another barrier in their way.

Give them as different sounding names as possible. You may find it “cute” but I bet you a million quid they will hate it.

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 09/03/2020 14:23

I know twins with rhyming names. Unfortunately their parents poor decisions didn’t stop at the rhyming. They are “those” children in the class.

mellie1806 · 09/03/2020 14:26

I kid you not, I know of a family who have 6 children, 3 have one lot of rhyming names, think along the lines of BOB, ROB etc, and the other 3 have another lot of rhyming, like TESS, NESS etc. It is laughable. Shows very little imagination I think. But ULTIMATELY, it is up to you and the dad, no one else's opinions should matter.
