Job Interview - Do I go for the handshake or not?!

Given we’re all avoiding physical contact. Do I wait for them to go first and then shake if they do? Will it look rude if I don’t put my hand out first?

I’m deflecting my anxiety about the interview on to this

So poll: Do I go for the handshake first?

No don't. Just use positive body language.

Shoxfordian · 08/03/2020 19:47

Shake hands
Don't be overanxious

I have 2 interviews this week and have been pondering the same question! I think I’ve decided to make a probably shit joke about it and not do it

madcatladyforever · 08/03/2020 19:47

No, wait for them to go for the handshake. Some interviewers would prefer not to shake your hand and especially at the moment.

Hotwaterbottlelove · 08/03/2020 19:48

I absolutely would shake hands. Congratulations on the interview.

Cockola · 08/03/2020 19:48

Properly shit joke was option 3.

  1. Go first
  2. Wait for them to go first
  3. Shit joke (although work for NHS so would also be inappropriate shit joke)

Boys all had to do elbow bumps at football this morning. So I was decided on no handshake.

Then DS told me they all coughed on each other instead Hmm

I had an interview on Wednesday and the man refused to shake my hand.

I then had another one on Friday and we did.

I just followed their lead. Maybe make a joke and say "are we braving a handshake?" to break the ice?

guinnessguzzler · 08/03/2020 19:53

I would recommend just asking people if they are happy to shake hands. I have done this in meetings this week and it worked fine. One person declined and it wasn't awkward at all.

ElderAve · 08/03/2020 19:53

I'd always take the lead from the interviewer anyway

Emmelina · 08/03/2020 19:53

I think if it were me, I’d take their hand if it’s offered. I’d also use hand gel in the reception area once I’ve let them know I’m here. Cleansing the outside germs and all that.

Hotwaterbottlelove · 08/03/2020 19:54

I think sticking your hand out, even if they turn it down, will still reflect well on you. If they have a procedure against it at the moment, they will just say.

CherryPavlova · 08/03/2020 19:57

I think I’d offer to shake hands with an opt out question “ Are we shaking at the moment?” With a big smile. You can wash your hands after the interview.
