Is it possible to get a dog when everyone works full time?

We would get a dog walker, but is it possible especially in the first few weeks when the puppy or rescue dog settles in.

How do people do it?

Or do people tend not to unless they do short days etc?

@Mydogatemypurse thank you so much for the info about the Cinnamon Trust! I’ve sent their info to a friend who would be a brilliant volunteer.

I find all this to be quite ridiculous. We work full time and have a dog and it isn't an issue. Sometimes I do work from home and the dog sleeps most of the time I am there! He is walked before I leave in the am and then my DS walks him when he gets home from school. Someone is home by 3:30 most days, if we will be out longer we may get a dog walker. The dog also sleeps in our bed so is snuggling with us for a lot of the time we are home! I don't worry about leaving him to do other things on the weekends etc. If everyone followed the mumsnet rule on dogs then there would be about 5 people able to have one!

Not an issue for you perhaps, but I think your dog might object if he were able Hmm if you work FT and someone is home at 330pm, that is a minimum of, what, 6.5hrs alone, that's such a long time, and, bearing in mind most people who work FT don't finish work until 5-6pm, most dogs would be looking at min 10 hours alone, even with a meesly 1 hour walk in the day, that is just too long and cruel. Poor bloody dogs Angry

Wow you have a dog that can write! Better take it on the stage.

I do agree though, I think its really selfish to have a dog when you both work full time and the dog is on it's own for most of the day, even with a dog walker. They're social animals, they want your attention

Maggie has 9 GCSEs, 4 ALevels, a BA, a Masters and is currently working on her PhD. And she's only a year old!

Shoxfordian · 10/03/2020 16:32

She's certainly smarter than me @spidey66

I’m sure a PP will have said this already but if you decide to get a rescue dog the staff will be able to tell you which dogs will be okay being left during the day. We had a boxer, walked him for an hour or so in the morning and he would be fine all day until we got home.

pigsDOfly · 10/03/2020 16:43

Some rescues won't rehome to people who work full time.

Clearly they don't feel it's okay to leave a dog for 10 hours, all day every day; but what do they know?

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 10/03/2020 16:50

I'm sure some people can make it work, but it's not much of a life for the poor dog.

SuburbanFraggle · 10/03/2020 17:36

It's cruel to leave an animal, which needs to be part of a 'pack' in an empty house for hours and hours everyday. A half hour poo walker is better than nothing but overall it's cruel.

If dogsharing were mainstream that would be good. A retired couple keeps it during the day, a youn family walks it and has it on weekends and there is another person who does 'emergency dogcare', someone who just wants to spend occasional time with a dog, like when you're on holiday, or for the day/evening.

LuxLuxLux84 · 10/03/2020 17:38

They need more interaction and stimulation than a daily walk. It’s cruel in my opinion.

He doesn’t sound like he has many attributes to bring to a more interesting job, if you’ll pardon me saying so.
What’s his excuse for having to take a boring, uninteresting job?

Thisismytimetoshine · 10/03/2020 17:53

This is obviously on the wrong thread Blush

Meadowland · 10/03/2020 20:34

@britinnyc. Exactly.
All those who think re homing a dog with the OP would be cruel, should spend a week watching how the dogs spend their days and nights in a rescue centre.....
And if anyone loves dogs, but feel they cannot have one, PLEASE consider becoming a volunteer dog walker at a resue centre.

lynsey91 · 11/03/2020 10:13

@britinnyc no I am sure it is not an issue for YOU. Your dog probably sleeps a lot because it is bloody bored out of its mind.

Dogs need company. They should not be left all day alone because selfish people who work full time want a dog and can't afford or be bothered with doggy day care and/or walkers.

I have 2 dogs and they are never left for any longer than 4 hours. We arrange for either someone to come and be with them or they go to a dog sitter. They are 6 and 7 and certainly do not spend all day asleep
