AIBU to think that this is an excellent idea?

In primary children 'learn' a foreign language, but the truth is that they learn very little of use until secondary - at which point they may start from scratch with a totally different language. And many children never master any useful amount of a second language.

A wasted opportunity.

Why not teach children a second language that they can start using immediately, and that enables them to communicate with their peers? Particularly as this will include children with communication impairments in the peer-groups.

Nobody has an opinion?

I agree, think it's a great idea. A friend of mine has a child with hearing problems and she and her DP are learning sign language from scratch, as are the rest of the family, and it's sad that most people he comes across won't have any knowledge of it at all.

Yabu and annoying to do a post about sign language without mentioning sign language.
But it's a brilliant idea. Every primary school should do basic sign language.

Great idea. I think learning other spoken languages at school is great but have never had a need to use them to any extent.

I learnt finger spelling in primary school (I think it might have been a Blue Peter thing?) and more recently did baby signing (BSL). In UK there is much more likelihood of these being useful in everyday scenarios over German (although I love German!): I've been able to communicate with a deaf stranger on bus and students with learning difficulties at work as well as my baby.

Yabu and annoying to do a post about sign language without mentioning sign language.

It was deliberate. I did not want people to see a thread about Sign and pass by because they think it's nothing to do with them.

My niece is deaf, have thought since she was born 22 years ago now, that it would make sense for everyone in the world to be taught international sign language then we could all speak to one another in a common language wherever we were.

Ihaveamind · 08/03/2020 00:23

I did a sign language course in secondary school. Sadly I have almost none left now through lack of use.
I think if we had learned and used it all through primary I'd have kept it. The International Sign Language learning above is a good idea!

I personally feel that sign language and first aid should be taught all the way through both primary and secondary school.

I can honestly say that French has been far more useful to me than sign language.
What would be really useful would be to teach it to a higher standard earlier on.
