I started watching a programme on Virgin today called The Rook. Spies and paranormal shit - looked good to while away the afternoon while I was supposed to be working.

Started off ok, quite intriguing. The main character has amnesia, and reads a letter to herself, which at the end, says 'don't ever forget your name which is X'.

I didn't quite catch the name so looked it up on IMDB.

It's Myfanwy. A fairly well known Welsh name, I'd think. Or if not, fairly clear it might have a more unusual pronunciation.

The reason I didn't catch the name was because they pronounced it to rhyme with....

TIFFANY. MIFFANY. ARE YOU SERIOUS RIGHT NOW.

Seriously if my mum or sister are on here they'll recognise this immediately because I told them both within minutes - but seriously, how did this get greenlit without someone checking that?! It's got Joely Richardson in it for cryin out loud!

I perservered for about ten minutes until Joely herself greeted the central character as Miffany and I couldn't take it anymore.

Anyway, this was about 7 hours ago and I'm still completely incredulous! Just thought I'd share for the laffs Grin

I hate when something bugs you like that. I still have the rage because Martin Compston isn’t allowed to be himself and Scottish in line of duty.

GroggyLegs · 06/03/2020 23:09

Prepare for Miffany to make the top 10 if this programme takes off.

chardonm · 06/03/2020 23:12

How do you actually pronounce it?

TerrorWig · 06/03/2020 23:13

It's more like Muhv-AN-wy with the stress on the second syllable. It's very Welsh sounding, but I could get over the American actress with a cut-glass English accent if she'd just pronounced it correctly!

Welshwabbit · 06/03/2020 23:13

OP, I thank you for this, although my husband, who is getting vastly annoyed with me chuckling and muttering "Miffany" to myself, doesn't.

LadyEv · 06/03/2020 23:15

I watched this show and thought the exact same thing about her name. Every time one of the other characters called her 'Miffany' it sent me in to mild rage (and they seemed to repeat her name a lot.) I started to think I had been mispronouncing Mfanwy all this time....

Russellbrandshair · 06/03/2020 23:18

Miffany! 😆 that’s hilarious

RandomMess · 06/03/2020 23:18

ShockShockShockShockShockShockShockShock

The name means My Fine One so the Welsh pronunciation of it fits the literal English translation.

FFS Miffany Angry

TerrorWig · 06/03/2020 23:18

Ok, I just looked up the book on Goodreads.

Apparently, it is pronounced Miffany, although later in the book admits she's 'been pronouncing it wrong her whole life' Hmm. I can't watch enough of it to see if they correct it in the programme!

It's written by an Australian, so I guess that's why he didn't know the pronunciation.

But, I'm still right, it's still stupid. And I'm stilled miffed(any) Grin

DH and I have been coming up with names for as yet unborn DC1 this evening. Thanks OP, Miffany is 100% going on the list Grin

TerrorWig · 06/03/2020 23:20

@Welshwabbit I've been walking round the house muttering 'Miffany' under my breath for hours Grin

@LadyEv did you finish watching it? It annoyed me so much I literally only got ten minutes into the first episode!

TerrorWig · 06/03/2020 23:20

You're welcome @Dollywilde!

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 06/03/2020 23:21

Thank you for the pronunciation OP. I must confess I would pronounce that if I read it knowing it was Welsh as ‘Meev-AN-wee’ myself but even I, clueless as I am with how words are meant to sound, wouldn’t have thought ‘Miffany’ 😂

Although now I’m confused, is the last part meant to be pronounced ‘wee’ or ‘why’

Samtsirch · 06/03/2020 23:23

Barmaid in Little Britain ?

TerrorWig · 06/03/2020 23:25

It's 'wee' @BritneyPeedOnALadybug. Try this:

I watched it all. It was an okay series - But they do call her Miffany all the way through it. if you can get past that it's worth watching.

JasonBrun · 06/03/2020 23:28

Hate it when a small thing derails good telly. Tried to watch peaky blinders with my brummie OH but he couldn't hack the shitty accents.

Miffany though I'm dying Grin

ThunderPython · 06/03/2020 23:29

YANBU because I once got about 10 pages into a Ben Elton novel and threw the bloody thing on the floor before it went to the charity shop the next day

Why?

He had written a Scouse accent. Not just said "Fred, a scouser, said..." and left me to imagine the accent. No. He'd written "arr ay, fookin this and fook that"

The rage I felt.

Fuck rhymes with Cook, Buck, Book, Shook, Rook, Took.

Spelling it 'Fook' infers it is pronounced F-oo-k.

My maternal side of the family are Liverpool born and bred. Not once have I ever heard them say "Fook" you ignorant arse Elton.

I read this book 16 years ago

16 years and I still get enraged thinking about it.

(I have had actual real life problems in the past 16 years too, but it's "Fook" that gets me raging)

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 06/03/2020 23:30

@terrorwig
just listened but the last part sounds like ‘noi’ to me, not ‘wee’. So now I’m even more confused (and may regret the 😂 I posted earlier thinking I was somewhat on point lol).

I hear (from the link) “muh-Van-oi’

KellyHall · 06/03/2020 23:32

CheshireChat · 07/03/2020 01:12

Could be worse- I saw it and thought that looks awfully like my fanny... Blush

GulliBelle · 07/03/2020 01:35

@Cheshirechat me too. I've spent the past half hour sniggering at imagined dialogue. Have you seen My fanny? Hasn't Myfanny grown? Myfanny says she's hungry, do you think a sausage would fill her up?

TinklyLittleLaugh · 07/03/2020 01:46

Nobody gives a monkeys about pronouncing Welsh properly though, even on something like the BBC news; it is really disrespectful.

Notanotheruser111 · 07/03/2020 01:48

Ohh I’ve only ever heard it pronounced Miffany and I know 2 people with the name who say Miffany (in Australia) I’m not even sure I could say it correctly I’m not sure my vowels work that way.
