AIBU to think you brush your teeth using water from the cold tap? DP thinks I am, he thinks I should use water from the hot tap. He's wrong, right?

I use the hot tap to rinse the brush before and after brushing.

nosleepp · 05/03/2020 15:26

I use the hot tap but my dm thinks that’s weird.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 05/03/2020 15:26

Normally the water from the cold tap comes straight from the mains and so is fresh and clean. If you have a hot water tank it is stored for some time. Some houses have the bathroom tap connected to a cold storage tank in the attic so potentially germy. Depends on your system but not worth an argument

Camomila · 05/03/2020 15:26

He's wrong Grin

Although when I had hyperemesis I used to brush my teeth with warm salty water as it made me feel less sick than cold water.

thistimelastweek · 05/03/2020 15:27

Cold tap. You wouldn't drink water from the hot tap.

Wingedharpy · 05/03/2020 15:29

Your teeth, your choice.
His teeth, his choice.
Amen.👍

HalfManHalfLabrador · 05/03/2020 15:34

I was always taught the cold tap as it’s fresh from the mains whereas the hot isn’t and has more germs

SpoonBlender · 05/03/2020 15:39

Doesn't matter so much these days, when it's less likely you'll have rats in your header tank.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 05/03/2020 15:51

I agree with cold!

adaline · 05/03/2020 15:54

Cold water - brushing them with hot makes me feel really weird!

ImGoingSlightlyBrad · 05/03/2020 15:55

Cold! Minty toothpaste is cooling so cold water.

You wouldn't warm up a polo mint 😂

Salene · 05/03/2020 16:08

Hot water isn't drinkable , I wouldn't be doing that. It's stored in tanks and can harbour bacteria etc. It's only meant for washing and cleaning

Snaga · 05/03/2020 16:11

Modern hot water doesn't tend to be too bad (via a combi boiler) but there's no way I'd brush my teeth with the hot water in my mother's house. It comes from a huge copper tank in the attic...I dread to think what particles might be floating in with the water (hot water tanks are not covered because of the expanding heat problem).

Always brush my teeth with cold water.

RhymingRabbit3 · 05/03/2020 16:24

It doesnt really matter, makes no difference.

The "hot water has more germs" argument doesnt work if you have a combi boiler as that is fed from the cold mains - no hot water tank

GiveHerHellFromUs · 05/03/2020 16:27

You wouldn't warm up a polo mint

But would you refrigerate one Grin

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 05/03/2020 16:28

I do mostly cold with a bit of hot... just cold water makes my teeth feel on edge.

user1423578854468 · 05/03/2020 16:32

The kitchen cold tap is direct from the mains. All the other taps whether hot or cold are from the tank, unless you're on a combi without tanks obviously. That's why when mains water goes off you still get cold water from your other taps until you empty the tank.

Somanysocks · 05/03/2020 16:34

Doesn't warm water soften the bristles too much therefore meaning you wouldn't clean your teeth properly?

Squirrelfan · 05/03/2020 16:47

Well, the hot tap is on the left and I brush my teeth with my right hand, so... hot is just more convenient.

PorpentinaScamander · 05/03/2020 16:51

I quite often use the hot tap because I have very very sensitive teeth and the cold water hurts.
Plus the cold tap on our sink broke when I was a child and mum couldn't afford to have it fixed for a long time so I just got used to warm water.

Roomba · 05/03/2020 16:55

I use the hot tap as I have sensitive teeth and cold hurts. I have a combi boiler and have suffered no ill effects over years of doing it!

Workingwoes · 05/03/2020 17:01

My dentist told me not to use water at all. So I only use a tiny bit of water to clean the brush afterwards, so either hot or cold, it doesn't matter does it.
