What's your opinion on Horrid Henry/Pepper pig?

LuLuBeth · 05/03/2020 11:45

I'm a step mum to two gorgeous children, DP and I recently allowed them to watch Horrid Henry however their mum doesn't like this and asked if we wouldn't in the future, so we respect that and they won't watch it again. However my personal opinion is that it's much better than Pepper Pig (which they are obsessed with) because at least Henry gets punished for his rude/bad behaviour where as Pepper just gets away with everything eg: fat shaming her dad! So what's your opinion?!

I absolutely detest both but both are/have been loved by my kids. The behaviour on them makes my blood pressure go through the roof.
Peppa is a little shit, ydnbu.

Wixi · 05/03/2020 11:47

It's possibly to do with age appropriate? My DD 10 loved Peppa Pig when she was younger, but now that she is older she loves Horrid Henry. She knows that he is naughty and comments on it, but I know that at least one of her friends mum won't let them watch it as he is a bad influence! My DD wouldn't think of copying either Peppa Pig or Horrid Henry in their bad ways. It's just a cartoon.

Windyatthebeach · 05/03/2020 11:49

Yabu to accept being dictated to by ex regarding rules in your home...
When I was a sm his ex demanded we put toilet roll in the loo before dsd had a poo!
I mean howay!!
As her df your dp can make parenting choices for himself. If that means allowing HH then so be it.

Mammabear31 · 05/03/2020 11:49

I hate HH, it reallt grates on me. My child often mimics the nasty things Henry says so I don't let him watch it very often.

Peppa Pig is just meh.

carlyclock · 05/03/2020 11:54

Meh. My kids managed to watch both of these and grow up to be decent teens/adults.

bookmum08 · 05/03/2020 11:54

Horrid Henry in the books is a horrible little shit who should have been left in the forest for wolves to eat as a baby.
TV version of Henry he is a little bit better - some of the trouble he does is more accidental not deliberate.
Film version Henry is actually quite sweet and works hard to save his school and tries really hard to win at the game show (sorry plot spoiler).
Peppa is annoying and a bit of a bossy know it all. But she is 4. So like a vast majority of 4 year olds.
Anyway there is approximately 4326 other kids telly programmes they could watch.

inwood · 05/03/2020 11:55

DTs loved PP when they were young - up until about 3. They then read HH until around the end of Y3.

They are way too 'grown up' (in their opnion) to look at either anymore. Thank god. PP is a bossy little shite. I didn't have much to do with HH thankfully.

Isthistrueor · 05/03/2020 12:01

Not a fan of Peppa but my DC enjoyed it when they were younger. I feel as though Daddy Pig is bullied by the whole family (including Grandparents).

I quite like Horrid Henry.

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 05/03/2020 12:03

😂😂

TerrorWig · 05/03/2020 12:07

Don’t like HH I think he’s hard done by tbh.

Don’t mind Peppa, she’s exactly like a lot of reception age children.

LadyofMisrule · 05/03/2020 12:12

I loved Peppa Pig. I was sad when the children stopped wanting to watch. I definitely don't put it on when I'm alone in the house. Oh no.

(My favourite episode is when Daddy pig designs a house for Wendy Wolf's family)

"What's your OWN house made of, Mr Pig?"
"Bricks. So don't even think about it."

Hingeandbracket · 05/03/2020 12:15

I liked both of these when DD was of an age to watch.

They are both one of the few kids programmes with UK voices - and Henry even has accents from places other than the South of England!

Not saying kids should only watch home produced content but it is welcome.

Twinmummyanda4yearold · 05/03/2020 12:18

We banned our 4 year old from watching HH as his behaviour is shocking! All of a sudden DD started getting an attitude, then we realised she was copying things being said/seen on HH.. I think it teaches children how to be literally 'Horrid'😂

labazsisgoingmad · 05/03/2020 12:18

with all my grandchildren and step grandchildren they tend to go through the same phase one day its peppa or ben and holly etc then its onto something else all part of growing up

Notso · 05/03/2020 12:18

Can't stand either of them. I hate children's programmes where the protagonist is a brat. DC1 now 20 used to love Angelina Ballerina who was a little shit.

PumpkinP · 05/03/2020 12:27

I like peppa pig. I’m just glad mine hate CBeebies thank god!

JassyRadlett · 05/03/2020 12:28

They are both one of the few kids programmes with UK voices

Seriously? What are you watching?

I think almost everything my pair watch has UK voices, either original or dubbed over the original (eg Octonauts). Everything from Postman Pat/Fireman Sam through Little Princess to the Worst Witch. So much British stuff out there?

Areyoufree · 05/03/2020 12:29

Just be glad it’s not fucking Caillou.

AriadnesFilament · 05/03/2020 12:35

HH banned because my two goad each in exactly the same way as Henry goads Peter, they copy Peter’s sneaky ways of getting Henry in trouble, they call each ‘worm’....... I could go on 😖

WilheldivaHater · 05/03/2020 12:54

Both are banned in my house, dds behaviour noticeably changed when she was watching Horrid Henry, being cheeky and rude. Luckily ds is too young for either so don't have to worry about it with him just yet.

I would advise you to ignore the pp who said not to listen to the mother though. It seems like a small thing to cooperate with for the sake of a harmonious mum/stepmum relationship.

PicaK · 05/03/2020 13:03

HH is truly horrid in the books. But TV is funny and his cheeky plans never really work.
Peppa Pig is marvellous. Love all the bits they throw in for adults.
But tbh it's irrelevant - mum's made a request. Decide how big a deal it is for you. Is it worth saying it's not a parenting rule you would choose but you respect her opinion?

BrimfulofSasha · 05/03/2020 13:12

I think HH brother is a whiny shit. Not sure i'd put up with that level of tattle -telling from any child. He also manipulates his brother into getting into trouble.
PP is obnoxious.

That being said, it's TV...I can't get upset about it. I dread to think what modern eyes would say about the programmes we watched as children. Children really don't pick up as much as we think from these things.

LuckyLickitung · 05/03/2020 13:16

I love reading Horrid Henry, so many opportunities for expressive voices, lisping through Perfect Peter, Horrid Henry whinging a la Kevin the Teenager and the mum and teachers in my best shrill, Monty Pythonesque "he's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy" shriek. I was performing my way through one of them the other night and DH began chuckling away on the other sofa.
We already had the family dynamic going before reading the books.

Peppa Pig can be the star feature of a hog roast. Fortunately the DCs never got into it, but how I've never launched an offending small child's tablet into the swimming pool, after hearing that manic tinkly theme tune and snorting looping around umteen times every single swimming lesson week in, week out for years, I do not know. I obviously have just enough Perfect Peter in me to be able to repress my engraged inner Horrid Henry Grin

Ahh, I've just realised that I've missed a trick there... all those missed opportunites to obnoxiously perform my way through Horrid Henry to drown out that ruddy pig...

NaviSprite · 05/03/2020 13:50

My DC are only 2 but my Mum introduced them to Peppa and HH. I actually don’t like either but DD loves Peppa - I think she gets a bit of a kick out of her bullying George and her DB (twins) has the same name. I let her watch a bit of it if I really need to get some housework done but much prefer Hey Duggee and Pocoyo.

I dislike HH because his little brother actually brings flashbacks of my childhood, little sister was the oh-so-perfect child, I wasn’t so he gives me the rage 😂

RedWine123 · 05/03/2020 13:52

To be fair there’s loads of kid’s programmes to choose from now, so at least you’re not limited. I personally love Henry and hate Peppa. That pig is banned in our house.
