is panic-buying selfish?

so I'm sure this is going to be a very mixed opinion but hard hat at the ready. I'm not talking adding a few extra tins of soup to your trolley.

but to take packs and packs of nappies. and all the vitamins. all the medication like paracetomal and calpol?

someone on my facebook was unable to get calpol for her toddler who is actually ill because people had bought the lot in a blind panic. like she said her kid now has to suffer with a temperature because people have bought it over a virus they may not even get and that may only cause them a cough on the mildest end.

I think its extremely over the top to be wiping out the alcohol gel sanitizers (again I know someone with a premature baby who always has them on hand as she has to be a lot more careful who has been unable to find any anywhere), nappies, baby wipes, medications and vitamins

sorry but to me this is just selfish and takes away from people who actually need them. educate yourself and follow basic hygiene- dont wipe out the stores of stuff you probably wont even need and take away from those who currently actually need them

Sleepingpup - almost everyone is allowed to use the toilet and wash their hands during the day; including shop workers, building site workers and bus drivers.

Incredible.

sleepingpup · 07/03/2020 11:36

@mindproject

Washing hands is the best thing to do.

But the 60% hand gel is a great interim measure.

You obviously have no need for it @mindproject but guess what! !!! not everyone lives the same life as you!!!!

mindproject · 07/03/2020 11:40

I typed 'hand sanitizer' into the search box. My settings are all normal I think. Loads came up at £1.89, loads more at £1.95 etc, from the UK. There are also some around the 99p mark, manly from China.

Roussette · 07/03/2020 11:40

There are plenty of bottles waiting for bids with astronomical P&P

I've put in lowest price first and 'buy it now'.

Cheapest is as above in my last post.

@mindproject

how long is the average till shift mindproject?

how long is a bus drivers, cleaners, shelf stackers, building site workers, delivery mans, postman's, shift @mindproject

how long do some workers commute?

How many metres of handrail would a mobility impaired traveller have to use?

You'd probably be shocked.

Roussette · 07/03/2020 11:42

I don't understand it mindproject because I can't get anything like that up, and I am pretty computer savvy.

Oh well...

mindproject · 07/03/2020 11:45

Ok, so your argument is that because 5% of the population need to buy hand sanitizer, anyone that buys more than 1 hand sanitizer and manages somehow to sell it on eBay for more than £2 is selfish. If the 5% weren't clever enough to realise they might need to buy it for their job (because they are never allowed a toilet break) are all stuffed and are all going to die because of the selfish eBay sellers.

Can you not spot any flaws in your stupid argument?

mindproject · 07/03/2020 11:48

Ahhh, break from the programming people, before it's too late.

Shandied · 07/03/2020 11:48

@Dophin2020 what is the point of the petition? It says '..to consider closing..' which they have. And after consideration in collaboration with other departments and experts have decided not to at this time.

sleepingpup · 07/03/2020 11:50

what?! @mindproject you're losing the plot.

I've NEVER mentioned Ebay????Hmm

read your posts?

I'm just questioning the 'hand sanitiser is useless' tripe you are spouting.

Plus do you really think that all those people who do shift work away from water ( eg my postman)
make up only 5% of the population?

HmmHmmHmmHmmHmm

I

mindproject · 07/03/2020 11:51

And nobody usually gives a stuff about shop workers, which is why you all use the self-service tills.

sleepingpup · 07/03/2020 11:53

@mindproject

my postman is carrying hand sanitizer but I'm sure you know better than him.

Also my friend who works at a till.

I could go on but you know best. Even though you don't know anyone who can't nip to the loo every half hour.

crack on

ILLBESUZIE · 07/03/2020 11:54

Yes. Selfish.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 07/03/2020 11:54

Dont be silly

Youve no idea what we do for jobs and if we use self service

mindproject · 07/03/2020 11:55

Not selfish.

sleepingpup · 07/03/2020 11:55

mindproject · 07/03/2020 11:57

If you are going to argue that people buying hand gel at £1 and selling it for £2, making a small profit is selfish, then you have to also argue that anyone who has ever sold anything for a profit is selfish.

sleepingpup · 07/03/2020 11:58

you've lost meHmm

mindproject · 07/03/2020 11:59

Smile Smile Smile

Chill out. Stop getting upset about people buying hand gel and make sure you are a prepared for what might happen in the future.

sleepingpup · 07/03/2020 12:01

@mindproject 👍

mindproject · 07/03/2020 12:03

Finally.

sleepingpup · 07/03/2020 12:09

that's me told. have a good weekend @mindproject

sassbott · 07/03/2020 12:15

Interesting thread. I’ve stocked up, but I always keep a running stock of what I would call ‘important’ things. Like calpol as an example.

What’s the line between preparing? The Government have finally told people to have sufficient stocks in to able to isolate for a few weeks. So if I have a family of 4 to feed, and get in sufficient stock, is following those instructions selfish or sensible?

I’ve absolutely stockpiled more than I would do if none of this had been happening. I have been doing so since the outbreak in Wuhan. Worse case it’s needed. Best case, it’s not, my food shop bill will be lower for a period of time and anything surplus I will give to my local food bank. I also bought extra and dropped that at the food bank earlier this week.

So does that make me selfish? Or prepared?

sleepingpup · 07/03/2020 12:19

@sassbott

has it been officially said then?
