To think Transformers is not a book

Come on, really?

Just call it Superhero and Disney Princess Day and have done with it.

Grimm Fairy Tales - lots of Disney films are based on those.

Lllot5 · 05/03/2020 13:25

What about dr who is that a book. Seen a couple of those. Not that it matters I guess.

blackteaplease · 05/03/2020 13:29

Meh. I used to think the same as you but I no longer care. Dd is on her 6th WBD and has sorted her own demon dentist costume. Ds s is on his 3rd WBd and he has gone as chewbacca and taken his star wars book in with him.

JellyfishandShells · 05/03/2020 13:32

I think parents are under pressure to buy an expensive costume that's going to be worn once and many don't have time to make one

Ignore the pressure - adapt normal clothes with a couple of simple props. Or use odd things from dressing up box that had been sourced from all kinds of weird places - jumble sales, Grannie’s cupboard etc.

BarkandCheese · 05/03/2020 13:42

It’s come as a character from a book, and as already shown there are transformers books, not come as a character from a book with literary merit.

Hoik · 05/03/2020 13:47

There's always one WBD snob...

It's a day about books and reading not costumes, it doesn't matter what the children wear or whether someone on the internet thinks their costume is acceptable based on some arbitrary opinion of what is/isn't "worthy".

Some parents cannot afford a new costume or props so they use whatever costume they have.

Some parents don't see the point of buying a new costume or pointless props, I know a few who haven't for environmental reasons, so again they use whatever costume they already have.

Some children don't like dressing up days or will dress up but only in certain costumes. DS1 school has declared it "Harry Potter Day" this year and only HP costumes are allowed, DS has gone in his normal clothes as a Muggle because 1, we don't have any HP costumes and 2, he hates dressing up. DS2 has gone to his school in a Muggle costume too because he also hates dressing up.

Some parents don't have the time to sort out costumes so use whatever costume is already in the house.

Some parents have chaotic lives and don't give a shit that it's WBD so the child wears whatever costume they already have in the house.

And, finally, some children like dressing up as Transformers and why should they be told no when it's a dressing up day?

There is a Transformers book. My DH has one from the 1980s! It’s like an easy readers. Long before the films. There may have been a tv show but I’m not sure

fartingsparkles · 05/03/2020 13:50

I would have preferred my ds to have dressed as a character from one of the many books he has read. However, for about 6 months he been saying he wanted to go as, guess what, a Transformer. He has never been a fan of dressing up, and so we don't have a dressing up box. So today he happily went in as said Transformer, with a proper Transformers book too (partly because I found a costume in a local charity shop).

I highly doubt all the 6 and 7 year old Harry Potters and Hermiones have read all the books.

oldwhyno · 05/03/2020 14:00

chill. it's an age thing. not too many superheros and transformers in year 4/5/6 at our school.

Tinkity · 05/03/2020 14:10

Definitely report them to the school, OP.

Try telling a 4 year old that Buzz Lightyear isn't from a book, when they're stood there with a Toy Story book in their hands.

YouJustDoYou · 05/03/2020 14:22

Jesus Christ, you care that much about little.kids enjoying themselves you came to bitch on a public forum??

Also, it is a book.

BoomBoomsCousin · 05/03/2020 14:38

Yes OP. You are right. We should police children’s reading and discourage them from the things they enjoy if we deem them too low brow. Much better to teach the young ignoramuses to hate reading than to support their ungodly interests.

APurpleSquirrel · 05/03/2020 14:38

I think you'll find most Superheroes are from books - comic books - but still printed published BOOKS before they were cartoons & films Hmm
