To call in sick to work

Smarshian · 05/03/2020 06:00

I’ve been awake since 2.30 as had a pounding headache. Have taken some pills and it’s now a dull ache. Still there but could probably deal with it, but I’m also exhausted from lack of sleep.
YABU - just suck it up and top up the painkillers.
YANBU - go back to bed

What is your job?

BillywilliamV · 05/03/2020 06:07

Will you get paid?
Are you menopausal? Because this is me at least 2 mornings out of 10, but I have to get on with thins!

StealthPolarBear · 05/03/2020 06:07

It's difficult. I'd tried to get up, shower and see how I am tbh and maybe go in with the plan of asking to leave early.
What type of work do you do?

StealthPolarBear · 05/03/2020 06:09

Hope you're feeling better soon

PoolsOfSunshineThroughTheGlass · 05/03/2020 06:11

Depends what your job is and whether anyone will have to give up their free day to cover for you, or whether it's just a case of you having to catch up on desk work tomorrow.

Trews2019 · 05/03/2020 06:11

Depends on the job (risk factor to self and others) but probably just get on with it and have an early night tonight.

PoolsOfSunshineThroughTheGlass · 05/03/2020 06:13

Depends completely on your job and whether you screw others over by not going in.

If you're a nurse and a colleague will be phoned and ask to give up their free day to cover then you need to go to work. If you do admin at a desk and it can be done tomorrow without seriously messing anyone else about then ring in sick.

GA2012 · 05/03/2020 06:13

Would you still get paid? Would they mind? Do you often go sick?

Sometimes getting up will actually help.

But I totally get your pain. Yesterday I woke up with something very similar. Didn’t ease all day until the evening! I wasn’t at work yesterday but if I was I wouldn’t want to be there!

My partner suffers migraines and vomiting with it. He refuses to go sick because if he goes sick he loses his annual £50 sick bonus. To me I’d rather lose the £50 than be vomiting at work (it’s not a big so not contagious but even so).

Kirkman · 05/03/2020 06:17

It depends.

Do you think its contagious?

Do you have a lot of time off?

Will you get paid?

What job?/what commute?

Loads of thinks would determine wether someone should phone in sick or not

NeverGuessWho · 05/03/2020 06:17

Absolutely depends on your job.

I wouldn’t call in sick in my current job - I would get paid, but it would massively impact several other people if I called in sick.

In my previous job - I would call in sick. I would lose pay but it would have very little impact on my colleagues if I missed one day.

Smarshian · 05/03/2020 06:19

I would just have to catch up on work tomorrow. I have been there 3 months but not taken any time off yet.
I’ve just showered and feeling a bit more alive.

ememem84 · 05/03/2020 06:20

If it were me I’d go in. See how I go.

PoolsOfSunshineThroughTheGlass · 05/03/2020 06:23

Oh, if you've only been there 3 months you'd better go in if possible. 3 months is usually only half way through probation - best not to call in sick on probation unless you have something contagious!

Smarshian · 05/03/2020 06:35

I’m up and dressed now and feeling a bit better. I think I’ll see how I get on. Problem is DH car shares with me and there’s no public transport to our house so I’ll probably end up staying so I don’t have to spend £20 on a taxi.

Trews2019 · 05/03/2020 06:44

What’s the job?

Marnie76 · 05/03/2020 06:48

‘ I have been there 3 months but not taken any time off yet.’

Surely this is as it should be, so not a measure of whether you should take time off today. Most people take no time off for sickness all year.

It is horrible going to work when you’re tired but I think you have to go in if you don’t feel that I’ll now. Get an early night tonight. I hope you feel lots better later.

Moo7878 · 05/03/2020 06:48

Shower, cup of tea, painkillers and go to work. If you feel rough you can come back.

yukka · 05/03/2020 06:51

Hope you feel well enough to last the day op, but go home if not. Sometimes being at work can keep you going but we shouldn't always put work first 💐

Bringringbring12 · 05/03/2020 06:52

Only three months?

I would drag my ass in no doubt. D&v/ flu etc totally different as contagious.

Headache and tired - difficult for me but doesn’t know anyone else, so I’d do it 100%

Fact your asking though leads me to believe you won’t for some reason

PotteringAlong · 05/03/2020 06:54

I’ll probably end up staying so I don’t have to spend £20 on a taxi.

That’s a crap attitude. It’s your job and you’re paid to do it. From that statement you’re clearly not that ill, you just can’t be arsed. Go to work.

threecatsownme · 05/03/2020 06:54

I don't think being tired is an reason not to go to work. I hate it when my guys call is sick just because they are tired.

I have staff with children with disabilities that don't sleep and partners needing overnight care but they are always there ready to crack on. T

The I'm tired ones (usually youger staff with no work ethics) get very little sympathy from me.

Good for you for getting up and ready Thanks

KatherineJaneway · 05/03/2020 06:56

Nice bottle of orange juice to help you feel more human, lots of water and eat healthily during the day.

theThreeofWeevils · 05/03/2020 07:01

That’s a crap attitude. It’s your job and you’re paid to do it. From that statement you’re clearly not that ill, you just can’t be arsed. Go to work

And that's crap reading comprehension. The OP feels that once in work, she has no option but to stay there because of the cost of getting home at an unscheduled time.
You're clearly not entirely illiterate but you just can't be arsed to engage brain.

Fr0g · 05/03/2020 07:07

Go to work!
I was feeling like that yesterday (tired after only getting a couple of hours sleep, not thinking it was justifiable to call in and claim I was sick).
I do have very flexible working, ao went in a bit later - 10am, but that meant no desks left, so a couple of hours working in the cafe. Ended up being there til 8.30pm; exhausting, but at least not working today.
Still can't sleep and been awake since 4am.
I wouldn't dream of taking time off just because I'd not slept.
Because I work part time now, I might call in and switch my days around if it didn't interfere with deadlines, meetings, or what I had planned for my days off but that would be in extremis.

I think we're all planning to switch to home working because of virus concerns anyway.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 05/03/2020 07:14

I'd go in. You've only been there 3 months and it's a headache and tiredness.

Get your work done, leave on time, then get an early night.
