To buy a gift or not

My soon to be 17 year old boy has been invited to his first party since he was about 8.
Its for a friends 18th and it is being held in a bars function room.
What is the etiquette for gift buying for boys? He isnt bothered either way but i dont want him to be embarrassed either.

Thanks

I wouldn’t, I would leave it upto my son to decide and to use his own money. If it was a friend I knew I’d put £20 in a card.

DS (16) has been to 3 parties the last few months. He's taken himself out to buy the birthday girl/boy a card and - a gift bag full of chocolate for one, a Costa gift card for one, and a Nando's gift card for one.

He's spent £10 each time.

My dd(16) would buy a proper gift but her brothers (one older, one younger) would stick cash(at least a tender) or voucher in a card

Probably cash or a gift card in a card.

Thank you for the advice. He is going to be the one sorting it out, just wasnt sure if he should or not.
