AIBU to think I can still travel to the UK next week?

I live in another European country (not one of those badly affected by coronavirus) and my husband is telling me that I'm being selfish for considering flying back to the UK next week. I'm fully prepared to keep an open mind and keep up to date with the news, but I just don't know what would have to happen in order for it to become clear that I shouldn't go. Looking for balanced opinions!

Don’t come here it like a war zone. People walking around crying all the time throwing their £24 eBay hand sanitizer at people and clutching their blue passports.
Our prime minister just got his mistress up the duff though so all not a total loss.

Reverse of you op, we live in the UK and are travelling to Berlin tomorrow for a weekend away. Have been keeping an eye on the news etc and we’re currently still planning to go

AdoptedBumpkin · 04/03/2020 19:45

Not unreasonable IMO. If you don't come, many others will be from European countries.

AlmostAlwyn · 04/03/2020 19:49

I'm in the same boat and flying back in two weeks with my toddler and I'm pregnant. Still planning on going so far. Why are you "selfish" according to him?

unluckyagain · 04/03/2020 19:51

Please come.

underneaththeash · 04/03/2020 19:56

Wait and see....I have 2 children going on different trips to areas of the EU affected by corona.

We'll not get our money back so will decide at the last minute.

It may be that your country is equally affected by the time you fly - although I would not fly with a young child/older person.

VeryQuaintIrene · 04/03/2020 20:00

Coming from the US to see my elderly mum on Saturday. The only thing that worries me is Trump getting hysterical and shutting all borders, but I think it's unlikely.

Frenchw1fe · 04/03/2020 20:16

I’m flying to the uk tomorrow.

I am bringing our last tiny bottle of hand gel and some wipes to use in the airport and on the plane.
I’ve been taking vitamin c and zinc.
Can’t do anymore.

CynsterBitch · 04/03/2020 20:21

I’m off to Scandinavia next week, short of an actual ban on travel nothing will stop me going

Ponoka7 · 04/03/2020 20:22

We've got good protocol for dealing with the virus. It's well contained when people do test positive and we have reliable healthcare.

That's all you need to consider. If you speak fluent English then there's no reason to not come. It will with you shortly. Is anyone close to you in the at risk category? That's the only reason that I'd change my travel plans.

Cmagic7 · 04/03/2020 21:04

Thanks for your replies everyone. I suppose his point is that many people will be wondering around unaware that they have it, and I might be bringing it back and spreading it around here.

Bring some anti-bacterial gel with you to use as bribery if anyone says anything and you’ll be fine. Smile

Are you allowed to be up so late and using WiFi.
You must have to go to school tomorrow, perhaps you should put the light out and go to bye byes. Night night.

Absolutepowercorrupts · 04/03/2020 21:21

It's scary but maybe the best thing is to take precautions, thorough hand washing, throw paper tissues away. Avoid large crowds. There's not much else that we can do.

badg3r · 05/03/2020 11:50

Where are you flying from?

ImRealHonest · 05/03/2020 11:52

Same boat. Our government have announced all travelers will be checked on re entry.

Work have announced a travel ban for all staff from Saturday. I fly Friday.

I’m still coming home.

You should have stopped after WiFi. Grin

@Absolutepowercorrupts
Sense of humour failure?

Skysblue · 05/03/2020 22:12

Thing is, to get to the UK you have to go through airports where people from all over the world have touched everything and breathe all the recycled air for hours etc and then assuming you land in London that’s where it is beginning to properly spread now and that obvs will get much worse.

I’d be furious if my partner did some unnecessary international travel at the moment.

The risk would be lower if you stay where you are. So it is selfish yes. Thousands have died from this and thousands more will die, and they will catch it from young healthy people who don’t die and didn’t want to miss their travel.

AlmostAlwyn · 10/03/2020 14:25

@Cmagic7 did you go? Depending on where you live, are you worried about not being able to get back again?

missinginactiongeorge · 10/03/2020 14:31

Well, slight chance you may not be able to go back when you planned but only very slight unless we have a mass Italian like breakout in the next couple of weeks. Even then, you' be allowed out. There are Brits coming back from Italy still.

Isthistrueor · 10/03/2020 14:34

Grin. Don’t even question coming, it’s perfectly fine unless you’re an elderly person with underlying health conditions.
