To insist that coeliac is positively excluded?

Ds is being investigated for severe gastric problems. Sudden onser, now chronic. He will see a consultant this week, they are considering Crohns/Ulcerative Colitis. A blood test for coeliac has come back abnormal, but not indicative of coeliac. Given that ds has a grandparent with coeliac, AIBU to insist that coeliac is positively excluded by endoscopy?

Yes - I was told endoscopy is the "gold standard" I seem to remember. But if they're testing for IBD as well, I would think he will get an endoscopy and colonoscopy biopsies, but worth double checking.

yanbu
the blood test can be unreliable and esp with the history I would insist on a biopsy for diagnosis

TalbotAMan · 04/03/2020 12:51

If DS is old enought to cope with an endoscopy, YANBU.

I'm a bit curious as to what a blood test could show for them to say the test is abnormal but not indicative.

sar302 · 04/03/2020 12:52

Sorry! That was yes you should insist, not yes YABU!

Yes insist

tiutinkerbell · 04/03/2020 13:36

Insist. They told me tests came back 'inconclusive' too so I carried on eating gluten. Cue a HUGE attack when I was in Ireland visiting family which resulted in a hospital stay (and massive bill!) and confirmed that I was coeliac pretty quickly via endoscopy.

Hi OP,
Just because you mentioned sudden onset I thought I would check if your son has been on anti-biotic shortly before his problems began. There are some gastric conditions caused by anti biotic use so if this was the case make sure he doctors know.

PragmaticWench · 04/03/2020 15:48

DD has coeliac and we were told the endoscopy with biopsies are essential to confirm/rule out when blood tests are inconclusive. Make sure your DS carries on eating plenty of gluten or any biopsies won't be accurate.

I'd also look at coeliac.org for information about the blood tests etc.
