AIBU to think nobody cares anymore. Thousands of refugees at the boarder of Greece, nobody wants these poor people

Did anyone ever really care?
I feel desperately sorry for these people but it’s doesn’t affect my every day life.
I think a huge issue is there is no solution to these crisis’, from Rohingya refugees to Syrian refugees- what is the solution?

Mintjulia · 04/03/2020 12:35

The solution is to make their home countries. They mostly don’t want to leave as far as I can tell. But how - I don’t know.

Mintjulia · 04/03/2020 12:35

*Make their home countries safe

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/03/2020 12:40

In theory yes richer, typically western countries should help improve their home countries, however recent experience has shown we tend to cause more harm than good.
Syria has a complex civil war, with Putin in the mix I cannot see how resolution is possible.

Baaaahhhhh · 04/03/2020 12:47

I think it is called "compassion fatigue". It has gone on so long, there are just so many worldwide issues, no-one seems to have a solution to any of them. Not helped by pictures of boats full of black sub-Saharan male African's being shot at, or crowds of young Middle Eastern men at the borders. I think the sad reality is, that most people would be more compassionate about families fleeing war in Syria, not so much about economic refugees from the various regions who are all trying to get in at the same border under cover of the general chaos.

EmeraldShamrock · 04/03/2020 13:04

I don't think compassion is lost, it seems there is no end in refugees arriving.
There are direct provisions centres popping up all over Ireland, they are overcrowded, badly managed, housing people with nothing to keep them busy, small quiet towns are overrun, it is a culture shock for many refugees.
9 Kurdish refugees have left direct provision, they're missing. I think people are very worried. Opening the flood gates won't help this problem it spreads it around, we can't leave them either.

potter5 · 04/03/2020 13:11

Lots of factors here. Overcrowding, prejudice, racism - all from the countries they are escaping to. There doesn't seem to be a solution. This has been going on for years and I do think that people are becoming immune to it. Thought it was disgusting seeing those poor people being shot at in the dingy, as if they aren't traumatised enough already! Angry

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/03/2020 13:12

I saw the video of the Greek boats shooting at the dingys and I was horrified- those are people. I do though understand the frustration of the Greeks who feel dumped on and abandoned by the EU

Well put

WeekendW0rk2020 · 04/03/2020 13:18

There is a difference between refugees & economic migrants

Also for adults & children

People just want a safe & better life

It's such a complex issue, it probably needs multiple things put in place to make a better life for these people

I sympathize, but don't know how to fix

EmeraldShamrock · 05/03/2020 10:22

The photos of the DC stranded on the border are so sad.
