To ask how you measure children's feet

I went to clarks today and they measured 2 years old feet with a gauge while he was seated. The size gave me was his size 6 months ago. I told the assistant that I measured his feet in cm and on the website this was bigger than her estimated size.
I measured having him stand on paper and took distance from heel to longest toe.
Now that most people order online how do you know what size to order?

Piece of paper and a ruler. I find that Clark’s measurements only suit their shoes ( odd that!) and the paper/ruler method is actually more accurate for normal shops.
The Clarks girl’s school shoes are a disgrace, not made for playing, running, kicking a ball or even keeping feet dry most of the time.
Next are better...

My in-Shop routine: hold left shoe sole onto bottom of child's right foot to check sole size and shape. Then try on.

Size and shape variances between and within manufactures mean anything else is a waste of time. I hate shops who have to go to the distant stock room to get different sizes.

Not tried Next so thanks to the previous poster for that tip.
