To call people Hun?

Hi all,
I'm going start by saying that I've NEVER EVER used Nethuns! I clearly watch too much reality television as I call everybody Hun (not Hon which is too Americanised). I also call everybody darling. Am I an MN abomination?

@midwestspring, thank you.

HavenDilemma · 04/03/2020 03:19

@ForestYeti LUSH?!?!? Are you serious? 🤮

Do you wear tracksuits, too?!

Pondlife87 · 04/03/2020 05:00

I don't use it, but I don't see the problem. Some people really over think things. You'd think you were saying 'hello you cunt' or something.

Lllot5 · 04/03/2020 05:18

Don’t mind any endearments. Apart from hun or babe. Don’t even know why.

Butchyrestingface · 04/03/2020 05:21

I’m Scottish. The sectarian associations make me cringe when I see the word.

AgentProvocateur · 04/03/2020 05:27

I’m another Scot who associates it with sectarianism. I don’t live there any more, but I’d never use it for that reason (and because it’s twee af). And I recoil when I hear it or see it written.

florababy84 · 04/03/2020 05:32

I quite like it (along with dear or babe) in conversation when said by someone I know to be warm and sincere. I find it affectionate and nice.

I hate seeing it written down eg on Facebook, or said by people who are fake and irritating.

hellcarryingahandbag · 04/03/2020 13:23

Hun, darling and sweetpea are the only ones I use... I HATE hubby 🤢🤢

Grumpos · 04/03/2020 13:30

I accidentally ended a call to someone saying “thanks honey” the other day. It was a professional but an informal call (not work related) iyswim.
I am still cringing at myself. I don’t know why I did it.
Although I used to have a colleague who called people honey and it just worked, it didn’t feel over familiar or weird. It really suited her personality, can’t explain why. Just wasn’t annoying. I can’t pull it off Confused

Patroclus · 04/03/2020 14:35

Ive heard from older rangers supporters that it used to be the other way around- they called celtic fans 'the hun' (just to mean the enemy)

yatapina · 04/03/2020 14:57

@Patroclus I've never heard that before - must ask my Dad. Seems very odd as it's generally an insult between the "Tims" (Celtic fans) and the "Huns" (Rangers fans)

ParkheadParadise · 04/03/2020 15:10

I've never heard that before either @Patroclus

trappedsincesundaymorn · 04/03/2020 15:10

Hon, chick and babs are the most common ones where I am...hearing them brings out my best "Paddington hard stare".

mrsBtheparker · 04/03/2020 15:15

Only if they're wearing a Pickelhaube.

Patroclus · 04/03/2020 19:21

Asked a few older rangers fans earlier and they said they remember 'hun' just being a term that was sang at the opposition a lot in the 70s, but seems to have stuck to rangers.

I get called it often but it doesnt bother me, I dont think its quite up there with T*g and Fen*n. Much more like Tim, as you mention yatapina

TARSCOUT · 04/03/2020 19:33

Detest it. Also detest honey, pet, love etc particularly when it's by people who I don't know!

GrannyBags · 06/03/2020 12:14

Someone called me ‘cock’ this morning. It was meant in a friendly way but I can’t get my head round that one.

Vinipote · 06/03/2020 12:26

Makes my teeth itch. 😬

AfterSchoolWorry · 06/03/2020 12:29

There's a school Mam on our what's app group that calls people 'hunni'. I can't help but internally cringe.

MulticolourMophead · 06/03/2020 12:36

I hate being called hun. I have a name so expect it to be used.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 06/03/2020 12:44

Cant stand being called Hun or babe

SoftPlayHell0 · 06/03/2020 12:47

Isn’t hun pronounced the same as hon? In any accent? Confused

FriedasCarLoad · 06/03/2020 12:47

You think “hon” is americanised and “hun” is correct? Confused

You do know it’s short for “honey”, don’t you?!Grin

sugarbum · 06/03/2020 13:00

My sister has always called me hun, hunny or babes. Ever since I can remember (I'm mid-40's)
It didn't start being a 'thing' until fairly recently (I mean the last decade or so) and more obviously with the onset of social media, when it became the devils work. Especially on mn, where mnetters have always been scathing about the 'nethuns'

I'm not a fan personally, when strangers use it. I'm not your 'hun'. I don't notice when my sister says it and its better than my childhood nickname

evilharpy · 06/03/2020 13:05

I hate hun, but I hate babe even more.

People who use hun tend to also be people who use x as punctuation on Facebook.

Hi hun x how are u x u goin out this weekend x
