AIBU to expect we won’t get our money back? Tenerife...

Meant to fly out on Saturday. I’m pregnant and my midwife and GP have said not to go, because they just don’t know enough about how it may impact pregnant women. I feel as though I should do as I’m told, but am quite gutted! Our hotel is the sister hotel to the quarantined one, about 15 mins away from it. DH is being optimistic and thinks we might get some money back, seeing as my GP is filling in a medical cert to say they’ve advised I don’t go.

So what do you think?

YANBU - of course the insurance won’t cough up
YABU - you may be in with some luck...

Have you read your insurance policy yet? It's normally reasonably clear as to whether they'll cover it or not.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 03/03/2020 19:41

We can’t say without seeing your insurance policies... but they might, if it’s decent insurance!

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 03/03/2020 19:41

My insurance has said they won’t cover deciding not to travel because of Coronavirus but if you have a special medical need then to call them to discuss. You might be lucky.

I’d just go.

Lockheart · 03/03/2020 19:41

I'd listen to your doctors over strangers on the internet...

chuck7 · 03/03/2020 19:43

I think your insurance would potentially pay up for you on doctors advice but not for anyone else

Bringringbring12 · 03/03/2020 19:45

Goodness - 15 mins from quarantined hotel and I’m pregnant... I wouldn’t give a rat’s ass about advice, I wouldn’t be going!

As for getting money back, do you have Insirance?

StylishMummy · 03/03/2020 19:46

@englishrain it depends entirely on your insurance policy. If you've been declared unfit to travel then it may be covered if your policy covers pregnancy related conditions

Roselilly36 · 03/03/2020 19:50

Usually insurance covers you for certain circumstances such as death of a close relation, redundancy, pregnancy (before policy came into effect) military postings etc, government directive against non essential travel. Travel insurance doesn’t cover people that no longer chose to travel. We have just lost some money, as we have chosen not to travel to Spain this, month due to my autoimmune illness. Have you read your policy?

Neverender · 03/03/2020 19:51

Don't just go - that's exactly why the elderly and ill are dying...

PinkiOcelot · 03/03/2020 19:54

I don’t think you’ll get your money unless the FOC advise you don’t go.
Have a read of Martin Lewis advice.

EnglishRain · 03/03/2020 20:00

We have got insurance. They've said they can't tell me anything and will have to assess our claim form when they get it. At the moment it's with the GP. They've said they're so busy they won't get to it for 7-10 working days when they receive it.

DH did the travel insurance 😬 he said there is no need to disclose pregnancy on it because it's not considered an existing illness so to speak. But I was pregnant when we booked the holiday, and he spent two weeks faffing around and then researching to decide who to go with!

It's with Travel Time. Their 'premier plus' policy.

No chance I’m afraid

OneHanded · 03/03/2020 20:11

I work for travel insurance claims but it depends on your policy - for us it wouldn’t be a pregnancy complication which would be covered as it’s a perceived risk, however as yours is doing we assess case by case so would escalate to a technical team for a final decision.

iolaus · 03/03/2020 20:13

If you were pregnant when you took out the insurance and didn't declare it they won't cover you - you break your leg and didn't tell them you were pregnant they try to get out of it

victorioussponges · 03/03/2020 20:16

@Bringringbring12 I'm not sure that's a "no chance". If the medical advice has changed since OP bought the policy from fine to don't go, I think that's something the insurer will need to look at more closely in assessing the claim.

awesomeaircraft · 03/03/2020 20:16

YABU I assume (not an insurer) if you can get the GP to write a letter saying you should not travel. Then it should count as a cancellation on medical ground rather than change of mind?

clpsmum · 03/03/2020 20:16

@OneHanded is it ok to ask you a travel insurance query? No probs if not and don't mean to hijack thread

ineedaholidaynow · 03/03/2020 20:28

Did you not declare pregnancy when you took out insurance?

EnglishRain · 03/03/2020 20:34

Didn't tell them no. DH says there was no option to. You just take out standard insurance and need to make sure it is sufficient for your needs. They don't class it as a health problem.

OP posts:
ineedaholidaynow · 03/03/2020 20:37

I would have thought you would need to take out insurance that had pregnancy cover if you are pregnant at the time of taking the trip.

Toria70 · 03/03/2020 20:42

I don't think they will pay out if you are claiming for a pregnancy that you didn't declare at the time of booking.

Bringringbring12 · 03/03/2020 20:43

They didn’t declare pregnancy at time of booking despite knowing.

It’s very clear - won’t be covered

OneHanded · 03/03/2020 20:44

You don’t declare pregnancy - it’s not a health condition! If your airline/cruise etc accepts you flying at however weeks when you book that’s fine.

EnglishRain · 03/03/2020 20:47

@Bringringbring12 there is nowhere to declare the pregnancy when you take out insurance. It isn't classed as an illness. This is why DH did so much research before he took any out.
