To think that toddlers should say thank-you...

...And not 'ta'? I think the reasoning that it's easier to say is silly. My ds is 16 months and can say 'Thank-you' - comes out as dang-do but I'd rather that than 'ta'.

i actually do not understand why Ta is taught to be honest, as most people do not say it later on in life. I do tend to find myself "teaching"to say oh fanx, as i do this as a response to a kiss. The SALT says that sort of thing is fine, they refer to it as family fun phonics as we have a few words of our own for lots of things. I would have to agree though that an older child should be saying thankyou and not ta. So some agreement re manners i guess

tori32 · 06/09/2007 14:01

Ta is definately easier for them to say when they are learning to speak. Until they learn to put 2 words together its a losing battle teaching thank-you. And I have to add that my dd could say naughty and mayonnaise before she mastered thank-you. Many children pronounce it fank you which i don't think sounds any more eloquent!

haychee · 06/09/2007 14:02

I know a few mums who, especially with their last child, who let them talk in certain ways because "its cute" well yes it is kind of cute but i think it should be corrected.

lucyellensmum · 06/09/2007 14:03

its ok haychee, im like a rotweiller with a sore head today and maybe i was picking a fight. I didnt mean to bite your head off, but in my defence, im PREMENSTURAL

haychee · 06/09/2007 14:08

Lifes a bitch isnt it eh? Thanks for the apology. Or should i say thankyou for the apology rather

lemonaid · 06/09/2007 14:08

DS refers to my breasts as "feed". Which is OK, but he pronounces it "feet", so that it sounds as though he's seriously confused, anatomically speaking.

haychee · 06/09/2007 14:18

shit bag??? Where has she got that from?

harleyd · 06/09/2007 14:20

"know a few mums who, especially with their last child, who let them talk in certain ways because "its cute" well yes it is kind of cute but i think it should be corrected."

at 12months? dont be ridiculous woman!

haychee · 06/09/2007 14:23

Are we only discussing 12month olds? Sorry i thought it was toddlers which to me means 12months plus.

EHM · 06/09/2007 14:25

wordsmith I am with you on this one. I say both. I am very pleased when my 15month old says 'ta'

harleyd · 06/09/2007 14:26

well i am taking your last comment to be directed at me, correct me if i am wrong?
it was me who posted i thought it was kind of cute that my lo said tata

haychee · 06/09/2007 14:26

And, i was referring to mums in RL not mums on this thread.

MrsScavo · 06/09/2007 14:27

LOL, lucyellensmum! I remember a thread you started about your DD's speach. Glad to hear she's saying something! MY DD is the same age, and also talks very little (although gabbles a lot). Definately no 'thankyous' from her. I would be horrified if people thought it was because I wasnn't teaching her manners.

haychee · 06/09/2007 14:28

No no not you directly. Your right 12months is a little young to expect clear speech! I mean some i know in RL who have preschool age kids and they appear to encourage poor pronounceation because "its cute".

haychee · 06/09/2007 14:32

People do make generalisations and assumptions everyday. Its sad really when you think about it, but unavoidable - part of human nature imo. Im sure i would be defensive if my dc had any difficulties in any particular areas too, but i suppose im lucky.

lucyellensmum · 06/09/2007 14:36

obviously from her father!!!!! its in refferal to the new puppy - i think its cute and to be honest i was so over the moon that she had a two word phrase, i ecouraged it

haychee · 06/09/2007 14:40

Good daddy!

haychee · 06/09/2007 14:40

You should call the puppy a two word name!

haychee · 06/09/2007 14:42

Dog number one is caed zilly but we call her zilly-dog (cos we used to have a cat and dd1 was a bit confused). We also have a 12month pup called bruce but we call him brucie-boy.
Might help??

lucyellensmum · 06/09/2007 14:47

the dog is called Bob as that was the name DD gave him, i call him bob the runty rat dog, among other things, but i think that might be a little ambitious.

PhoenixSongbird · 06/09/2007 14:54

Shit bag? Runty rat dog? Poor pooch

lucyellensmum · 06/09/2007 15:13

its all meant with affection, i'll not tell you what i call him when im cross ;)

2shoes · 06/09/2007 17:04
