To worry about DH sepsis?

DH has come down all shivery and chills with a nasty chest infection. He's on immunosuppressants . When would you call about sepsis.

Can he still urinate OK? Is he confused?

chocolatespiders · 02/03/2020 23:49

Ring 111 and give them his symptoms

Orangeblossom78 · 02/03/2020 23:54

He went for a wee. Have had sepsis in the past maybe that's worrying me. I guess might be too early see in the morning. Do chest infections do this I wonder

Is on methotrexate and humira

I mean I had it not him

Yes bacterial chest infections can turn to sepsis. Have had 3 family members nearly die from it including my baby boy.

Keep a close eye on him. Check his breathing, is he breathing more heavily? Heart rate fast? Seems a bit out of it?

Don’t wait for all this to come on though as that means the sepsis is taking hold. Call 111 for advice. Even if he can see an out of hours GP and they can do his observations, they will be a tell tale sign.

Good luck, and keep us updated. Hoping he is fine.

As he is immunosuppressants, I would take him to A&E you need to rule out neutropenic sepsis, does he have a high temperature? They need to at least take a blood test. I'm a nurse and would definitely want him checked over by a Dr.

I hope he is feeling better soon.

sleepylittlebunnies · 03/03/2020 03:20

Go to A&E.

He already has a confirmed chest infection. He has chills and is shivery; which is a symptom of severe sepsis. He has the added complication of being immunocompromised.

You can check his temperature, pulse and respiratory rate at home. But I would just head straight to A&E.

As a nurse I would bleep the doctor to assess my patient based on the infection and chills alone.

Orangeblossom78 · 03/03/2020 06:56

he had a sleep after some 4 flu...will check on him today...when I had sepsis they wrote it off as anxiety (along with the high heart rate) but that was over 8 years ago...yes temp can be cold as well as hot i remember that as well.

Will keep a careful eye today

You should have a biologics nurse that you can contact? I would try them and ask for advice, I’m assuming you have stopped his meds now?
I hope he’s ok

onanothertrain · 03/03/2020 07:48

If he has a chest infection he shouldn't be taking methotrexate or humira. He needs bloods checked as well.

backinthebox · 03/03/2020 08:03

A family member is immunosuppressed atm and came down with a chest infection. We took him to A&E and it was the right thing to do as he was very ill indeed. Sepsis was one of the issues. I would take him in ASAP and tell them when you arrive he is immunosuppressed- they have to find him somewhere away from other patients to wait. My dad got a room.

Falcor40 · 03/03/2020 08:08

I’m also immunosuppressive. I agree. Get him checked. .

Orangeblossom78 · 03/03/2020 09:39

Hi he doesn't take them daily every week or so, so no meds now...

He doesn't want me to call the doctors, says it feels like flu. Has vomited and got a bad headache, taking some painkillers and trying to bring temp down with a cold flannel etc. Tricky.

Not going anywhere will monitor him. Yes he does have an IBD nurse not sure if they or GO would be best for call. I think in the past has been the GP.

Personally would call 999. My DH had neutropenic sepsis twice during chemo and thought it was just pneumonia, luckily I didn't take his word for it and they were able to treat him. He then died from sepsis (amongst other things) at a later date so I wouldn't risk it.

AhoyMrBeaver · 03/03/2020 09:43

Don't hang around, get the man seen. It isn't tricky.

inwood · 03/03/2020 09:43

I'd call 111 now and tell him whatever they say. If he needs to be seen he needs to be seen.

Orangeblossom78 · 03/03/2020 09:44

It is tricky when he's telling me not to, means going against that.

he did have the flu jab

AhoyMrBeaver · 03/03/2020 09:45

But do you think he's in his right mind? At what point would you overrule him?

Orangeblossom78 · 03/03/2020 09:48

Yes he seems calm, his temp is coming down to normal actually

I do know what you mean I was very confused when had it. I'm keeping a close eye, his breathing seems Ok not too fast and heart rate about 90
