AIBU for not wanting to send my dd in pjs?

I've just found out that for World Book Day, my dd's school are wearing pyjamas instead of fancy dress. She's really upset as she's been planning her outfit for weeks. But I'm just generally feeling grumpy about it as it just feels weird sending her in night clothes... Or AIBU?

For context, the school had a pyjama day in November - and it was freezing and raining. The wealthiest kids turned up in brand new onesies. None of the kids seemed particularly happy about it but I guess we all thought it was a one off. Apparently the same thing nearly happened last March but some of the older kids managed to persuade the school to change their minds.

It's to do with inclusivity. All kids have PJ's so all kids can take part.

DD can still dress up at home in whatever she likes.

Youhedge · 02/03/2020 20:30

Weird? They are just clothes.

superram · 02/03/2020 20:31

I’d much rather pjs than environmentally damaging and expensive polyester outfits. I’m sorry your daughter is disappointed but the rest of us think it’s a much better idea.

Camomila · 02/03/2020 20:31

I think the school are probably doing it because DC already have pjamas so parents don't need to buy costumes, but I agree a) pjs are colder than normal clothes b) some people may feel they need to buy new pjs either so the DC are warm enough or because they feel their pjs are too tatty to wear out of the house.

FortunesFave · 02/03/2020 20:31

YANBU in a way but I can't see what it's got to do with inclusivity Sasha...children in poverty are no more likely to have decent pyjamas than the cash for a costume.

Flutteringsatlast · 02/03/2020 20:31

Let her invite a few friends after school to dress up properly..
A few brownie points owed from a dc never go to waste ime..

KLS02 · 02/03/2020 20:31

pyjama day is great. i’d send her in with her pyjamas on

Lucked · 02/03/2020 20:32

Out school do a combination - if you want to dress up fine, if not come dressed for a bedtime story. I do know what you mean about pyjamas being a bit thin for winter though.

No we don't.

What have pyjamas got to do with World Book Day? Confused

Swimslikeamole · 02/03/2020 20:34

I've refused to send mine in pyjamas or a onesie in the past. It was easy to have an alternative though as they had a dotty theme. You're not being at all unreasonable.

Camomila · 02/03/2020 20:34

I remember having to wear pjs for work once (early years teacher). I did not like it at all. Much prefered the year we dressed up in fancy dress, I felt weird in my pjs talking to parents!

SpeedofaSloth · 02/03/2020 20:35

My kids' pyjamas are not school-fit. If they are going out in them, I would need to buy new ones.

For WBD DS is wearing clothes he will wear again. DD has one item I've made, and the other items she will wear again. Dress-up doesn't necessarily have to be polyester from the supermarket.

YANBU OP.

Bedtime stories Fortunes.

The school are doing it in response to all the criticism about creating extra work and cost for parents and the environmental impact of "throw away" costumes. They've tried to help you.

BrimfulofSasha · 02/03/2020 20:37

Fortune- but children in 'poverty' are definitely more likelt to have any PJ's than a fancy dress costume. That's what makes it inclusive.

As for the what have PJ's got to do with World book day- my DD's school have given it a theme of 'bedtime stories' you obviously wear PJ's in bed- that's the connection.

ElderAve · 02/03/2020 20:38

When I've had to wear PJs for work I've gone with joggers and a tshirt with dressing gown . My PJs aren't fit to be seen either.

midnightstar66 · 02/03/2020 20:38

I don't have an issue with PJ days in general. My 2 DC love them however it seems an odd choice for book day. Why not most do nothing rather than something unrelated?!

Waveysnail · 02/03/2020 20:38

Send her in tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt then. Really doesnt matter. I'd much prefer PJ day to buying a costume for a day

ElderAve · 02/03/2020 20:39

I am Shock at the number of people who don't get the bedtime stories link Grin

Aria20 · 02/03/2020 20:41

My sons' school is doing the same they are 11&8 and both no longer wear pjs, they sleep in pants... they also don't have onesies and I'm not sending their nice dressing gowns into to get ruined! I wouldn't buy a costume from supermarket either tho my oldest would have gone in a football kit (Frankie's magic football) and youngest would have gone as Harry Potter as he has that costume already.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 02/03/2020 20:41

DS's school does pyjamas every year. I think it's great, takes the pressure off the parents who can't afford to buy costumes.

Namechangexyz1 · 02/03/2020 20:42

I’d much rather pjs than environmentally damaging and expensive polyester outfits

So pjs cant be made out if polyester ??

Grumpington · 02/03/2020 20:43

Thanks everyone. Good to get perspective. I guess I wish that the school had mentioned it weeks ago instead of today, but never mind... Yes, I might send dd in tracksuit bottoms and hoodie as it's been freezing. Good idea.

ElderAve · 02/03/2020 20:43

FGS Namechange, not so much, no but even if they are PJs tend to be worn till they fall apart, costumes maybe one or twice.

Carpetforsale · 02/03/2020 20:44

I wish my DCs school would do this!! I'm a single parent to 3 who's just left their father because of abuse and I have exactly 23p in my purse. Anyone got any good ideas for (very) cheap homemade costumes??

FortunesFave · 02/03/2020 20:46

Namechange exactly....just like ALL WBD costumes MUST be bought from Asda! We always make our own.
