To never ever put the heating on?

Awayawaywe · 02/03/2020 09:30

In the last 2 years we have had the heating on a maximum of 10 days. We use hot water bottles at night and blankets and copius amounts of tea to keep warm. This means our electricity bill is the same in the summer as it is in winter (although we do bathe more in winter as in summer we mostly just have a wash)
We have 3dc all five and under and now when I visit other peoples houses I am sweltering! I end up in a vest sweating my head off!
Are we the only ones?!!!!

Ps this is saving us about £30 a month in the winter months.

Are you really really broke? I can't see why you'd live like this if not. You don't shower or bath in the summer? It's really odd behaviour

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 02/03/2020 09:49

you need to check your bank statement to know how much you spend? Good grief

What are you expecting from this thread exactly?

EnidBlyton · 02/03/2020 09:49

do you have a coal fire?

Haworthia · 02/03/2020 09:50

Only on MN is living in a freezing house considered a virtue.

Awayawaywe · 02/03/2020 09:50

Yes storage heaters. So we can't turn them off.
Kids are fine too, they run around all day so are always warm!
Must be great insulation because we are all fine! Only when it's been really cold have we had it on, but being storage heaters you can't turn them off so we always regret it by afternoon.

I can't believe so many people are saying IABU

And I'm asking because it was a warm day yesterday and when I visited my parents they had the heating on and I was sweating in a vest. I even had to take my socks off and roll my trousers up! They said it was freezing and they are only mid fifties.
Definitely not going to tell them about this thread though Shock

are you healthier?
if you feel unwell you need warmth op.

EnidBlyton · 02/03/2020 09:51

you have storeage heaters?

adaline · 02/03/2020 09:51

we boil a kettle in the morning and keep it in the thermos so only one boil.

Yeah, of course you do Hmm

Bluntness100 · 02/03/2020 09:51

Only on MN is living in a freezing house considered a virtue

Well clearly not as nearly every response is that this is a really unpleasant way to have to live. However people do have financial problems and this must be what’s causing th op to live like this. Unless she is not mentally well.

EnidBlyton · 02/03/2020 09:52

your dc drink tea?

motherheroic · 02/03/2020 09:52

If it's a money issue I could understand. But just being tight for the sake of it? The amount you're wasting on boilng the kettle, teabags, milk, sugar just to keep warm..... You might as well just put the heating on.

Awayawaywe · 02/03/2020 09:52

@Roomba thats me! I suppose we have just gotten used to it being a bit cooler.

picklebarrelfalls · 02/03/2020 09:53

Aye, right you do. 'Copious' amounts of tea and hot water bottles all round for a family, from one flask of water . It sounds like brilliant fun in your house.

EXACTLY!

Bluntness100 · 02/03/2020 09:53

a bit cooler

That must be the under statement of the year..

Lozz22 · 02/03/2020 09:54

I wish mine only cost £30 a month then I wouldn't have had to spend most of autumn and winter freezing cold. My electric and heating bills are extortionate and i live by myself so I spend most of the times I'm at home wrapped up in loads of layers and still frozen. I earn a good wage each month just can't afford to have my heating on every day. In fact on the days I'm at work it doesn't come on full stop.

Babyg1995 · 02/03/2020 09:54

Do you have kids if so you are being very unreasonable what a way to live Confused

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 02/03/2020 09:54

Good grief! I spend more than £30 a WEEK on heating! Mind you I work from home and have a child with additional needs.

Jellybeansincognito · 02/03/2020 09:55

Just because you’re fine doesn’t make it ok. You’re probably used to it- saying you find a home with heating on too hot?

It’s not healthy to live like that- it kills the elderly- hence the heating allowance that available to help.

Being cold is miserable- I can’t believe you’re inflicting that on your kids for such a minuscule amount of money.

You boil the kettle and put it in a thermos to save energy?

There’s saving energy and money and then there’s this...

Aderyn19 · 02/03/2020 09:55

I live in a house without a gas supply and in the winter can spent nearly £250 per month on electricity. I hate being cold and would certainly not live like you do for the sake of saving £30 unless I was totally on the bones of my arse.
Not having showers in summer isn't very hygienic imo.

Pukkatea · 02/03/2020 09:56

What's the actual temperature in the house? For example, I don't use heating but my flat would be about 17 degrees anyway without it. If it was much below that I'd reconsider. My current office doesn't have heating and I'm sitting here in a coat and bedsocks with a giant coffee.

caperberries · 02/03/2020 09:56

If you are doing this for environmental reasons, well done! YANBU

If you are doing it so save £30 a month, YABU - unless you are on a very limited income

lookingforadvice8372829 · 02/03/2020 09:57

Our heating is turned on every day from about November through to April. From May we tend to gradually stop using it as the outdoor temperature gets warmer.

Put it on as soon as we wake up and turn
It off when the house warms up enough.

Then we turn it on and off again through the day to warm everywhere up.

At night we tend to leave it on for a few hours before bed as it feels colder. It's always turned off when everyone is asleep.

Sounds like a miserable way to live for someone who does feel the cold. You say you don't but what about the kids?

Jellybeansincognito · 02/03/2020 09:57

I also agree- just having a wash in the summer is rank.

Especially if you’re sat sweating in a normal heated house. Goodness me, you must be dripping in the summer.

Whatnameisgood · 02/03/2020 09:58

I gather that, from an environmental perspective, it would make a difference if everyone heated their homes a bit less. I’ve started to heat the house a bit less and wear a warmer jumper. So good for you guys for going the whole hog if that works for you!

TinnedPearsForPudding · 02/03/2020 09:58

I'm wondering if the OP's never ending kettle full of boiling water might be related to the infamous MN chicken that can feed a family of 5 for 5 days
