To never ever put the heating on?

Awayawaywe · 02/03/2020 09:30

In the last 2 years we have had the heating on a maximum of 10 days. We use hot water bottles at night and blankets and copius amounts of tea to keep warm. This means our electricity bill is the same in the summer as it is in winter (although we do bathe more in winter as in summer we mostly just have a wash)
We have 3dc all five and under and now when I visit other peoples houses I am sweltering! I end up in a vest sweating my head off!
Are we the only ones?!!!!

Ps this is saving us about £30 a month in the winter months.

I absolutely agree with pps about clothes smell. I did it once. It was drying too long and yuck. Never again.

Also. Sofas, carpets etc get dump smell too. In this climate it's just unimaginable for me not to heat and air.

TabbyMumz · 02/03/2020 18:50

It's interesting to see how long a thread can run with no op input...19 odd pages now!!!

InFiveMins · 02/03/2020 18:50

I really hate being cold. I can't imagine putting the heating on 10 days over 2 years Confused. Even if you can't feel the cold, surely your children must? Particularly with them all being so young.

Dieu · 02/03/2020 18:52

Sounds like a joyless existence to me, as presumably you do feel the cold if you have all the blankets, tea and hot water bottles?! Grin

Ironfloor269 · 02/03/2020 18:53

OP isn't coming back, is she?

WalkingDeadTrainee · 02/03/2020 18:53

Re the central heating 40 years ago.
It's 2020! 40 years ago was indeed 1980... Time fliesCake

AhNowTed · 02/03/2020 18:53

What a bloody miserable existence.

WalkingDeadTrainee · 02/03/2020 19:04

Can someone explain to me that bath and wash thing?Blush
Is bathing having a nice long bath and having a wash is just a quick shower or quick wash in partially filled bath?

"Re the central heating 40 years ago.

It was indeed 1980. Masses and masses of new build houses such as Wimpey houses were built in 1960's, without central heating . Late 1970 / 1980 the masses started to get it installed. We didnt get it till about 1990. Many people in their 50s can remember life without central heating. If people had it in 1960, lucky them...none of my peers did.

For me, the word bathe, means you are bathing...ie you have a bath. Having a wash is usually done at the sink, or possibly a quick shower.

Ginfordinner · 02/03/2020 19:18

I was born in 1958. We had central heating in our house.

GreenTulips · 02/03/2020 19:23

I was born 1969

I didn’t have central heating til I owned my own home in 1998

Not every house had it installed

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/03/2020 19:29

I read the first page and see you have storage heaters, I would turn them off too, useless things but I would but convector heaters to take the chill off when you need it. Cheap to buy and as they are thermostatically controlled ,not loads to run.

faracrossthepond · 02/03/2020 19:42

@Awayawaywe YABVU.

I am all for moneysaving, but hell will freeze over before I sit in a cold house. I work very hard and so does DH, and we deserve to be comfortable.

It seems very harsh to force your 'sit in a freezing cold house' beliefs on your 3 little children. I am actually a bit worried for them to be honest.

faracrossthepond · 02/03/2020 19:44

I also don't give a shit if people made a piece of coal last a month 'back in the dark ages.' It's 2020 now, and there is absolutely no need to sit in a cold house!

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 02/03/2020 19:57

If clothes dry without any form of heat, they probably smell musty.

They take ages to dry without heat, and the length of time it takes creates the smell. No warmth, no air and stationary wet items smell stagnant.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 02/03/2020 20:03

When ds landed back home after uni, l made him wash all his clothes. He said he washed them all the time, and they just dried in a couple of days. After I’d finished being🤮l explained to him that you need heat or air to dry clothes without them smelling.

He did as he was told!

SeigneurLapindeGrantham · 02/03/2020 20:14

Why are you only boiling 1 kettle a day? Are you saving on electricity as well as gas or whatever you use to heat your radiators?
Surely your children's comfort is something you feel strongly about, your post comes across as being a bit pleased with yourself about saving money when you don't have to.

WalkingDeadTrainee · 02/03/2020 20:15

Oh 😳

GrumpyHoonMain · 02/03/2020 20:16

As long as you aren’t wasting the money you save on fags and drugs it’s fine.

Lynda07 · 02/03/2020 20:23

Op where are you?
Have you taken your children to see Frozen ll yet?

Wannabangbang · 02/03/2020 20:36

Blimey can't imagine bathing in your home, don't the children get cold when getting out of the bath. Can't be very comfortable for any of you

MrsBeeluga · 02/03/2020 20:40

Don't think they bathe too often @Wannabangbang. My guess is, they use their electricity to defrost the dc now and again Grin.

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 02/03/2020 20:42

Another one here who grew up in a freezing cold house. It was bloody miserable and my main memories of living there are of being cold, seeing my breath in the mornings and not wanting to get out of bed for school.
Everything was damp too with condensation dripping down the windows. God it was depressing.
Are you sure your kids are ok with your lack of heating OP or do they just think it’s normal to be cold?
I am now the other extreme and have my heating cranked up full blast all winter. Our gas bill is about £200 a month and worth every penny!
