Would upu ever use it in real life? Makes me cringe to my bones!!! Confused

OP posts:
Daffodil55 · 02/03/2020 09:26

"But how else do you describe good quality ham?"

*sarcasm alert
Jolly good GQH of course, then everyone knows what you are talking about.

I still struggle sometimes with all this SIL DH DC lark but know it is necessary. Slowly learning.

Naice is daft. Many daft things on t'internet.

YouForgetYourself · 02/03/2020 09:26

What a weird take @drina27 You sound weirdly angry so I'm sending you sending you head tilts, tinkly laughs and un-mumsnetty hugs, hun.

There is nothing you can say on here that someone doesn't upset someone in some way. Sorry, that doesn't make someone's teeth itch.

Fannia · 02/03/2020 09:27

I think people are reading too much into it someone making a little joke about posh ham doesn't mean we hate anyone who is MC. I mean some of my best friends are MC.

Lynda07 · 02/03/2020 09:29

I don't like it, it's stupid. In real life nobody would say it, pronounced 'nace' as in 'mace'. I also think some of the abbreviations are ridiculous. However 'wouldn't of', 'bored of' and starting a sentence with 'so' is equally irritating.

No one is forcing us to post here, we can either accept or not.

drina27 · 02/03/2020 09:31

to the desperate-to-be-middle-class types

I think you mean desperate to be upper middle class.

Those who use it here are mocking the snobs!
......
Which is in itself a type of snobbery and extremely defensive especially when those you are mocking are not snobs but just speaking/writing naturally.

drina27 · 02/03/2020 09:34

One may start a sentence with “So...” if one is making a point. That also applies to the words “and” and “but”. We are now in the 21st Century!

kingkuta · 02/03/2020 09:34

I have in my head an image of the types of posters who think it’s so amusing

Exactly this. I think this is why it irritates me so much.

drina27 · 02/03/2020 09:35

Translate?

Abelino · 02/03/2020 09:37

It's just a silly joke word, same as saying la-di-da, getting the rage from it seems a bit daft.

But then, 'fuming' and 'horrid' really get on my nerves, so I suppose we all have our bugbears.

Frothybothie · 02/03/2020 09:46

Does it "Do your head in?"

Barbararara · 02/03/2020 09:46

But it’s a mumsnet convention, it’s not meant to be a real life word.

You use different language conventions in different situations. Computer mediated communication (to use the technical term) follows distinct patterns. It’s not supposed to be as grammatically precise as formal English. It is essentially transcribed speech - hence the made up words, the phonetically transcribed sounds and the use of colloquialisms like ‘of’ instead of ‘have’.

These things have a secondary function of flushing out different groups of users and identifying outsiders who aren’t au fait with the in-jokes.

drina27 · 02/03/2020 10:00

Don’t you mean oh fay?

drina27 · 02/03/2020 10:01

Or if you are trying to be desperately upper middle:
eau fay

potter5 · 02/03/2020 10:07

Makes me smile.
My mum speaks naice on the phone when she puts on her posh voice.

There are lots of sayings that will irritate people here on MN. Its only meant as a bit of fun. Smile

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 02/03/2020 10:39

So you like snobs Lynda?
Ok. Each to their own.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/03/2020 11:10

But it’s a mumsnet convention, it’s not meant to be a real life word.

My mug, pictured upthread, is a real life entity. Blame MNHQ for that. I'm inclined to think it was an error of judgement because, of course, I'm fussy about the mugs I use for naice coffee.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/03/2020 11:14

www.lexico.com/definition/naice

It originated in the early 20th C so MN isn't totally to blame for this outrage on the OP's nice sensibilities.

MayFayner · 02/03/2020 11:21

Naice is a very useful word! It conveys a value system in a very simple but flexible way, that has a specific meaning conferred by context. it's something everyone immediately understands & saves a lot of words

This ^^

AryaStarkWolf · 02/03/2020 11:37

Oh I hate that one too

BubblesBuddy · 02/03/2020 15:21

Yes, I guess it saves a lot of words - probably because posters don’t have the words to use in the first place! So purely missing out words to convey what they really mean, luckily can just be replaced by a made up one said in a “snarky” way to irritate people. Let’s think of lots more then conversations will be deliciously short!

Paintedmaypole · 02/03/2020 15:42

It is sometimes funny anda quick way to convey something but it can be a bit sneery and a swipe at Hyacinth Bucket types.

ChicChicChicChiclana · 02/03/2020 15:42

All of us have words and phrases we dislike. It's a big site. Yabu.

Itstheprinciple · 02/03/2020 18:10

I remember back in the days when this started with the shopping lists and the naice ham.

Everyone knows there's ham and there's naice ham!

We've not had a good shopping list thread for ages.

missmouse101 · 02/03/2020 18:16

I agree OP. It's bloody irritating.
