To want a new car?

We made a decision not long ago to keep our ancient old cars til they die. Since then we’ve had two massive (£500+) bills on one of them and it has now got another problem. It’s only worth a few hundred and I just want to scrap it. DH keeps saying the same could happen if we change it.... but we wouldn’t buy a rattling tatty 12 year old car with well over 100k mileage!

He does loads of miles (min 60 a day) and I’d just rather have something more reliable and economical for him to commute to work!

How can I convince him?

In economics and business decision-making, a sunk cost is a cost that has already been incurred and cannot be recovered. Sunk costs are contrasted with prospective costs, which are future costs that may be avoided if action is taken.

Why not look into options on Autotrader or the like to show your husband the kind of thing you would like so rather than a theoretical new car which he may be thinking that you're considering a £20k plus type of model and therefore instantly dismissing the conversation, you can actually look to see what is out there and reasonable.
I had this almost exactly but in reverse with my husband wanting a bigger car for me in time for our new baby's arrival and I really didn't want to spend the money but he started looking and showed me very reasonably priced options and we were able to look at it together with an open mind and come to a compromise. But I admit, until he showed me a few options that were in a reasonable price bracket I was very dismissive as in my mind, it was a waste of money.
