AIBU to not dress up for world book day?

I work for a national organisation and earn just above the living wage. I am also a single parent with two children. An email to all staff went out last week telling us that the charity is celebrating world book day and we "can" dress as our favourite character in exchange for £1 donation. That's £1 donation to the charity that I work for anyway. A follow up email informed us that there was a "lovely" costume available for £20 (ie half a day's pay) in a shop nearby. AIBU to ignore the fuck out of this dressing up nonsense and bung them a quid to keep them happy?

I've done 10 years of world book day between my two kids. Last year was the youngest one's last and I was relieved that the whole thing had come to an end. After a decade of buying expensive costumes/making shit costumes the last thing I want is to have to do the same for myself. I honestly can't be arsed. AIBU?

Go as a Muggle.

Go as the woman from 50 Shades of Grey.

I feel your pain! I work in retail and for National Charity Week we’ve been asked for ideas to raise money... all involving staff and not customers! Doesn’t seem right when there are only a handful of staff yet hundreds of customers every day.

Thank god the days of having to dress up the kids are over. Luckily my son loved Diary of a Wimpy Kid so all he needed was an American accent 🤣

We had ours early and it was so exciting to go to the morning assembly and see the kids in their costumes. The reception kids wore their dress up clothes but the KS2 kids were mostly dressed in creative home made costumes (my fave was captain underpants!) or wore regular clothing. Lots of girls chose the rainbow magic fairies, who wear regular outfits plus a pair of old fairy wings.

Don’t get your attitude when this website has a huge list of book characters for kids you could do without buying anything new.

As an adult, why can’t you simply go in your own clothes and be a character in any fiction? It’s not the Carnival in Rio for ffs. No need for buying elaborate costumes 😳

Go as lady godiva? I've checked and she's been mentioned in at least one book.
Clothes will be cheap but the horse might be a bit expensive I suppose.

I do get you (i hate dressing up!), but costumes don’t need to be expensive. for the last 3 world book days i got away with under £5 for mine. crafting felt is your friend! we had zog, Robin hood and this year project X explorer type

Happy days when we didn't have this shit in schools. I'm all for encouraging reading but it doesn't need to cost people money every year to do costumes (and for some it only encourages 'keeping up with the Jones' syndrome). It can be done just as well without the costumes.

tryingtoloseweightnow · 02/03/2020 08:26

All this dressing up is so wasteful! It's not great that schools and workplaces are encouraging it.
Thankfully DS nursery have asked children to bring in 1 or 2 old books to swap with their friends and bring their favourite cuddly toy for a special story time.

Don’t go to work in pjs......eurgh.
How are clean pjs any different to clean clothes when it comes to a “costume”? Hmm

Parker231 · 02/03/2020 08:30

Wear PJ’s - Tom’s Midnight Garden

TroysMammy · 02/03/2020 08:31

Just wear normal clothes, take a wooden spoon with you and stuff your face all day. You can be Nigella Lawson if cookery books are your favourite.

Purpletigers · 02/03/2020 08:34

Dress in a brown top and trousers and stick some leaves on a hairband. Mr / Mrs Stickman ?

Oh course you may look like a giant turd but thems the risks 😉

ShatnersWig · 02/03/2020 08:38

Friend of mine always suggests keeping your kid of school for the day and reading with them. Next day at school if the teacher wants to know where they were they were at school but they couldn't see them because they were being H G Wells' The Invisible Man.

severalboxes · 02/03/2020 08:39

I think you're being a tiny bit grouchy but YANBU not to dress up, because it's optional.

curlsnotfrizz · 02/03/2020 08:40

I find it odd if adults dress up.

not a fan of kids dressing up either - WBD seems to be about buying outfits these days rather than reading.

Newkitchen123 · 02/03/2020 08:40

World book day has become fancy dress day and now has sod all to do with books.
I love the idea of the poster who said their kids are swapping books. That's exactly the point!
As for the £30 costume... No. Just no
