£30.25 for entry to Alnwick Castle & Gardens!

Looking to book a weekend away in Alnwick, amongst other things we wanted to visit the castle. It's £30.25 per adult to see the castle and gardens - so £60.50 in total for me and DH. DC is under 4 so entry is free.

AIBU to think this is extortionate? Or is it really worth it?

Is there a way to get a discount? Can't see any voucher codes for entry.

Warkworth castle is fab and puffin tours from amble harbour are great and not to £

KeepYourWigOn · 01/03/2020 16:52

Doesn't the poison garden cost extra?

MissPoldark · 01/03/2020 16:55

No, no extra for poison garden.

Gift aid is a bit of a swiz for a private garden owned by a millionaire anyhow.

maggienolia · 01/03/2020 16:57

Second visiting the poison garden, you may have to queue a bit. Craigside is wonderful too.

AlwaysCheddar · 01/03/2020 16:58

£30 each!!!! RIP off! I wouldn’t go.

mrsbyers · 01/03/2020 17:01

Family ticket £45 here whichmuseum.co.uk/england/alnwick/alnwick-castle/tickets-prices

MaxNormal · 01/03/2020 17:01

Surely the gardens wouldn't be at the best right now, in the arse end of winter?

ScrommidgeClaryAndSpunt · 01/03/2020 17:01

Wallington (NT, near Morpeth) is also nice

madcatladyforever · 01/03/2020 17:02

It's a ridiculous price and its not even that great.

I'd definitely give it a miss. I'd rather go to Lindisfarne which is incredibly atmospheric. Not much fun for kids though.

MrsCasares · 01/03/2020 17:02

That is so expensive. It only cost me €14.90 to see the Alhambra in Granada.

Hoik · 01/03/2020 17:02

Alnwick Garden is owned by charitable trust, the money from sales gets invested back into the garden and into local community projects.

Straycatstrut · 01/03/2020 17:02

We used to go every year when we lived up there. The garden in the summer is brilliant, really well looked after and magical for kids. The boys loved all the little water play features and the cherry orchard chair swings Love the castle around Halloween time, the grounds and broom stick racing is great.

I'll definitely go again at some point. Treetop cafe bit is brilliant too.

originalcobra · 01/03/2020 17:03

jeffing hell they're having a laugh! No way I would pay that... you'd be better off joining the NT and having loads of places to see. We go to NT all over the country as we have the family membership.

NeurotrashWarrior · 01/03/2020 17:03

I live nearby ish but we don't tend to bother. We've been a couple of times. It's worth it if you go a lot as the ticket lasts all year.

The poison garden is good but I think you get much more out of wallington, Gibside, Cragside and various other NT places or Eng Heritage such as Belsay and all the Roman sites.

The castle is good fun if you're v into Harry Potter and castles.

Spend a day at barter books though, you won't regret it!

GeraltOfRivia · 01/03/2020 17:03

It's great if you love up there as the ticket for the castle lasts all year. I'd agree with going to Beamish. Very much worth the entry fee.

hopeishere · 01/03/2020 17:04

We really liked it. We basically spent the whole day there! It was Easter and the cherry blossom were out - stunning!!

Allergictoironing · 01/03/2020 17:04

Can you get it without gift aid or something? Much as I'd love to give sometimes it just adds so much.

Gift Aid doesn't cost you, the consumer, anything. It means that because the place or event you are visiting are classed as a charity, they are able to claim back the tax from the government. So assuming you are on 20% tax rate, to have £7.50 in your pocket you need to have earned £10.00. If entry to the place/event is then £7.50, the charity can then claim £2.50 from the Government.

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/03/2020 17:05

Tbh Hampton court palace wasn’t cheap but it was worth it. If you enjoy that sort of thing you’ll like it.

QueenOfToast · 01/03/2020 17:05

I think it's expensive, but if you like Harry Potter and/or Downton Abbey, then you might think it's worth it.

When we visited Alnwick we did the castle without the gardens (which made it a bit cheaper).

Overall I much preferred Cragside which is free if you're a National Trust member.

Enjoy your holiday.

NeurotrashWarrior · 01/03/2020 17:05

Holy island definitely worth it esp if have either NT or Eng Hertitage.

The castle is sublime. And the beautiful walled garden.

Extracurricularfatigue · 01/03/2020 17:06

You get some money off (10%? 15%?) with English Heritage membership.

LeavingTheTable · 01/03/2020 17:08

Not worth it.

Arthritica · 01/03/2020 17:08

The gardens are wonderful with kids. I'd prioritise that over the castle.

TattiePants · 01/03/2020 17:09

It's not extortionate as it's two separate venues and to do it properly you would need two days. It's £13 entry to the gardens for an adult which isn't that bad for a full day out. Plus, you can return as many times as you want within the year for free. With an under 4 I would pick the gardens over the castle.

MaryShelley1818 · 01/03/2020 17:09

Both the castle and gardens are worth it, especially as your castle ticket lasts a year! They're amazing.
