5ft 5 10 stone with knee pain should I loose weight?

Bit a stressful time with work and being ill recently. I used to run a lot (not far and I wasn’t good at it but running up country lanes was me time - my absolute love) but now both knees have tendinitis which has lasted months and I’m seeing the physio but they’re not improving. I can’t seem to even walk on the pavement without pain.

I’m not overweight but thinking I could weigh less. Looking great isn’t my motivation at the moment but wondering even though my bmi is “healthy” if losing some lbs might get my knees into better condition to start running again. Any thoughts dear mumsnetters

Lol at the people saying OP is 'heavy' at 10 stone. It all depends on where she carries the weight and how muscly she is. I'm almost 12 stone, 5"2 and my BMI has me at obese. But i'm a size 10, have GG+ boobs and have quite big hips, so you never know.

I too would say swimming OP, it's good a keeping your joints supported. Also, have you checked you're wearing the right shoes? If you have flate feet etc you may need a special shoe to prevent your posture from causing damage.

I second seeing a sports physio. Mine told me almost the exact opposite of what yours did to cure my knee tendonitis - stop running, and definitely don't rest, I had to do daily strengthening exercises. I had more pain on resting than I did while moving.

Holding a wall squat for 30-60 seconds a few times a day was very effective in relieving the aches and pains.

Binky did it go? Did you get back to running?

Interesting! You see I can’t squat without real pain. I do wonder if diagnosis is dec correct seems a lot better of physio diagnosis of cause is a little bit “it could be” rather than “it is”.

Striving yes you’re right re weight. It’s hilarious if you saw my top half in a photo you would say I’m really slim if you saw my lower half (derrière) you would say ooo could do with losing a few pounds! Size 14 at least in pants 😂.

Swimming - I can’t seem to get a consistent good stroke with an elevated heart rate. With jogging I could just keep going and going with what rate consistently around 140-160 and feel fine. I swim half a length feel out of breath, flap my arms (to prevent drowning) and heart rate is like 110 and I feel awful. Plus I’m vain and it flares my dry skin but I would rather exercise than do nothing.

Damn autocorrect what i meant to type is I wonder if the diagnosis is definitely correct. Physio seems to say “it could be” rather than “it is”. They don’t mri anymore so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well yes , I had major back pain issues
And lost 3 stones (gained one back though )

And it helps
As 3 stone is carry a coat made of a fairly heavy toddler ever day !

Weight loss and physio will do you proud

There are people in Mumsnet who think a BMI of anything over 20 is heavy.

LaureBerthaud · 16/03/2020 10:54

10 stone is pretty heavy for 5'5"

Don't be daft.

BinkyandBunty · 18/03/2020 05:02

Yep, all cured! It took a few months.

DH carried on running through knee pain, and is now diagnosed with an official fucked knee (I think that's what the specialist said). Now he's been told he needs a replacement knee, but is putting off having it as you only get two replacements in a lifetime and the second one is something you don't want to have, much more invasive. So now all he can do is a little walking on the flat. He's 52, and it suck to have to give up things like our dancing and hill walking.

So please treat it seriously and find some other form of exercise that's easier on your knee.

Feel sorry to hear about your husband. This is what I fear and why I’m keen to have an MRI. My body feels it really want to run but knees cry pain even with walking. 😢

Thanks for sharing.

Binky so glad you’re all better!
