You can self-isolate, or you can isolate yourself.

I'm tired of reading about people self-isolating themselves (not on here thankfully).

AIBU to be annoyed?

I don't understand why the self is needed. What's wrong with "I'm isolated".

FloreanFortescue · 01/03/2020 13:39

No it sounds ridiculous!

Fallsballs · 01/03/2020 13:44

I think of locking oneself in a box with chains at self-isolation.
I think it’s the press’s use of dramatic language. The DM were on about “mass morgues” being planned in parks for example.

TheQueef · 01/03/2020 13:46

It's a minor one like over exaggerate, it'll creep in to common use.

I understand why it’s self-isolate @MotherForkinShirtBalls it’s indicating that the decision has been made by oneself (though possibly following a guideline) rather than a forced quarantine.
I agree with OP that there’s no need to “self isolate oneself” though.

Yeah, fair enough "Ellisandra", you're right. The phrasing just sounds horrible and clunky in my ear which has made me grumpy about it 😂
