to think that the biggest risk of corona virus will be superbugs

People are going crazy over using anti-bacterial products (which may or may not work), AIBU to think that this will lead to more and more so called 'superbugs' which are resistant to anti-bac products?

I agree. People are overreacting.

Thymelord · 29/02/2020 17:53

The overreaction is staggering. People really need to employ a bit more critical thought.

It's easy to get sucked into the panic isn't it, I looked on Amazon at anti-bac products out of curiosity and some are ridiculous prices now - one 5l bottle was £199.

Our GP has always advised against anti-bac cleaning products because of the increase in allergies and superbugs and it's made a lot of sense to me.

As someone with one lung and severe lung disease, how do you suggest I protect myself from corona virus? Hardly overreacting when it could truly kill me Hmm

It's not over-reacting in your case, obviously. But people without reasons to be concerned who are using anti-bac all the time now (and there must be masses given how it's not available) are going to be potentially causing massive long term problems. Like antibiotics, the strong 60%+ stuff should only be used by people who genuinely need it - like you.

Those who under react are also lacking in critical thought.
All I hear is 'it's just the flu'
Or 'it's only bad if you're old/have underlying health issues.
Experts have said it is over three times more deadly than flu and ten times more contagious. Add to that no vaccine or natural immunity means it has the potential to hit very hard.
That said we have less than thirty cases in the UK at the moment. Sensible precautions such as hand washing and having a bit of extra food in incase of needing to quarantine is a good thing.
No need to panic yet.
Just keep in mind that the world would not be reacting as they have done for 'just the flu' and take sensible precautions.
Super bugs are concerning. Bar soap and hot water is the most effective defence. Hand gel for situations such as the tube/touch screens but only temporarily due to the downside of such products.

Foobydoo · 29/02/2020 19:36

Sorry 10x more deadly than flu

housemdwaswrong · 29/02/2020 23:33

It's irritating for those of us that use it regularly. I teach (and take immunosuppressants), so I use hand gel regularly in school to wipe my doors handles etc.

Can't get it anywhere by me now.

I voted YABU because the advice from the WHO is to employ good hygiene to stop the spread. Soap is best but out and about 60% anti-bac is better than nothing.

Your point about the use by “people who don’t need to be concerned” is a red herring. It isn’t just about avoiding getting it yourself. It’s about reducing the spread for the benefit of everyone.

I am terrified about antibiotic resistance but in the short term we have to do our best to stem the flow of coronavirus.
