What is Burgess Hill like?

sonicwassurprisinglygood · 28/02/2020 17:20

I'm not sure this belongs in AIBU but couldn't think where else to ask. We're thinking of moving to Burgess Hill to cut down my husband's commute each day and I was wondering what it like as a place to live and what are the schools like?

Thank you Smile

Are you moving from nearer the coast?

You couldn't pay me to live in Burgess Hill. I find it provincial and dull. I would rather keep my long commute than move there to save an hour a day.

I'm sure someone will be along soon to tell you how marvellous it is though!

Sparkletastic · 29/02/2020 18:56

It's not great. I live 10 minutes away. Schools vary. There's a good private girls school. The town itself is depressing and the housing developments and commercial estates are sprawling further and further out.

uncreativeusername · 29/02/2020 18:57

You'd be better going for Hayward's Heath or Bolney.

cliffdiver · 29/02/2020 18:58

Not great. Haywards Heath is better.

MrsApplepants · 29/02/2020 18:58

Such a boring place. I would never live there

Sparkletastic · 29/02/2020 18:58

Horsham is way nicer. Haywards Heath at a push.

NotYourHun · 29/02/2020 19:02

It’s a bit Daily Mail. I live close and have family there. Some of it is quite nice but the town centre is depressing.

Have you considered Hayward’s Heath, Hassocks, Hurstpierpoint, Horsham?

Hobbes8 · 29/02/2020 19:02

Hassocks is nicer if you want to be on that train line. Burgess Hill is the ropiest bit of that bit of Sussex, but it’s a nice bit of Sussex so even the ropy bits aren’t that bad.

everythingisginandroses · 29/02/2020 19:05

It has a Waitrose, but these days, so does Haywards Heath. HH is nicer.

hettysdrawers · 29/02/2020 19:12

I've lived there- in my opinion there's just nothing..nice there. It isn't picturesque, or by the sea, or particularly near any nice countryside, things that would make living there more enticing. Town centre is awful, nothing in the town for teenagers to do. Bars/ pubs are mainly rough. They seem to just be tacking thousands of new builds round the edges and typically not building the infrastructure. There's nicer places depending on your budget.

sonicwassurprisinglygood · 29/02/2020 19:22

Thank you for the replies. We'd be moving from a sleepy seaside town along the coast. It'll be an absolute wrench to leave as we've lived here for so long. I'll suggest Hassocks to my husband. We hadn't considered there Smile

The redevelopment of Burgess hill town centre appears to have ground to a halt and so there isn’t much there! Haywards Heath town centre isn’t really much better although I think there are more places to eat! with all the house building I’m pretty sure the towns will eventually combine to become one!

Emlou07 · 29/02/2020 19:24

It's not great. They have some good shops, but it's built up and crowded. Haywards heath is definitely better. As are some surrounding villages.

Emlou07 · 29/02/2020 19:25

Hassocks is lovely and so in Lindfield if you want to stay around that area.

Isleepinahedgefund · 29/02/2020 19:30

"A bit Daily Mail" is the best description I've ever heard of Burgess Hill 😁

Hassocks is much nicer, Horsham is a good suggestion too. Avoid Crawley at all costs.

Sparkletastic · 29/02/2020 19:35

If your husband can deal with the commute or work at home occasionally I'd stay out tbh.

Sparkletastic · 29/02/2020 19:35

*put

Hassocks is amazing with young kids. Lovely family feel and lots of opportunities to make friends, good schools and a train station.
