To ask if anyone had a slightly elevated Vitamin B12 and it not be something life threatening or serious

Sorry posting here for traffic. I have also posted this under general health but don't seem to be getting many responses.

I recently had a blood test and the test results have come back. Surgery didn't even bother to tell me. I contacted them today and the receptionist told me that my vitamin b12 " was slightly elevated" as per the GP's notes on the system. The GP has marked it as " Satisfactory" but this particular GP is known for misdiagnosing and inaccurate advice ( not only me but others as well). She has given me and my IL's as well as other patients incorrect advice before which were contrary to consultants advice as well as her own colleague's advice. The receptionist said that they were not allowed to give me the readings over the phone and i cant go and collect the results today as it is raining and i have a toddler with me. So i have been looking things up on Google and it says an elevated Vit. B12 results could be related to liver disease (such as cirrhosis or hepatitis) Myeloproliferative disorders (for example, polycythemia vera and chronic myelogenous leukemia) or kidney disease which has got me really worried. Has anyone had slightly increased levels of Vit B12 which was not caused by any of the above? For info- i am taking Pregnacare Breastfeeding as i am ( kind of) breast feeding toddler. I say "kind of " as she doesnt want feeding all the time just about twice a day, or sometimes just once and i seem to be low on supply. I was wondering if the vit b12 in pregnacare could be causing this. Will be booking an appointment with my regular GP next week but worrying in the meantime.

Hi I would say it is almost certainly due to the supplements you are taking. I'd also question whether you actually need to be taking these supplements at all. I'm assuming your toddler is also eating a healthy diet so therefore doesn't actually need the additional iron, B12 etc that will be passed on through your breast milk - could it be doing her more harm than good? I'm at the opposite end of the spectrum and have B12 injections every three months for health reasons. If your bloods are showing elevated levels then I would see that as good enough reason to stop the supplements. I wouldn't assume there was an underlying health condition.

... You're worried about slightly elevated B12, but you're taking B12 tablets?

You're catastrophising. You should look into that and work on it, stop googling B12!

Leukemia? Get a grip. Googling stuff gives you the worst possible case, and doesn't give you all the other info a GP has in their head about "if it was kidney issues, this this and that would also be symptoms, patient doesn't have those or any other indicators so it's probably THE VITAMINS SHE'S TAKING"

My daughter sometimes has elevated B12, but only because she’s unable to absorb it so has to have regular injections of it, so just after those it would always be reported as high. Suggest you stop taking it in supplements - unless you are vegan, lack intrinsic factor, are coeliac etc you should easily get enough from your diet. I wouldn’t be worried about a slight elevation though and it would have said on the test result if you were out of range enough for it to be a concern.

Logically, you must know this is anxiety talking. Not criticising you for this but trying to help you think it through. Your level is only slightly elevated, a doctor has looked over it (even if it’s a doctor you don’t trust) and more importantly, you’re taking a supplement.

I think you need to step away from google.....

Thanks all for replying. Yes i kind do think that i am catastrophising and it's probably just my anxiety talking. I suppose what had me worried was that i read that vit b12 was water-soluble so any excess should leave the body through urine. So if it is still in my body it made me think maybe my kidneys aren't doing their job properly or it's something more serious. Anyways, i think you are all correct..i should probably step away from google and calm down a bit. I have also decided to stop taking Pregnacare- really don't think i need it anymore.
