Amazon pantry. Is it worth it? What do you buy?

Never used it before but had a quick nosey and it seems expensive? Or is it just me? Aside from the fact it's delivered to your door I am not seeing the benefits or am I missing a trick?
I mainly shop at Aldi, Asda and home bargains for some things. Tend to stick to own brand mainly but not adverse to premium names. I have been doing a weekly shop due to finances and the way me and dh used to get paid but things have changed and I would prefer to do a monthly shop, and just top up fresh here and there. I can still obviously do this but thought amazon might save me money!
I honestly thought things like big sacks of dog food would be cheaper but it isn't imo. It's £10 either way for what I buy.
So MN, do you use Amazon pantry and what do you buy? What bargains have you had that I am missing?

YABU= It's cheap
YANBU= It's expensive and not worth it.

Amazon underpay tax using corporate structures that divert UK profits elsewhere. I won’t use them unless what I want is essential and can’t be bought elsewhere (and that’s rarely the case).

I'm not sure about Amazon pantry but I use Subscribe and save.

Mostly for pet food, I found the Science Selective rat food cheaper than big pet shop, if you buy over 5 items you then get 15% discount

Doesn’t amazon pantry have a £3.99 per order delivery charge?

olivo · 27/02/2020 18:39

YABU! I use it, for all sorts of dried food, snacks, drinks. Kitchen roll etc. It is way cheaper than locally. Each month, they have a selection f things and if you buy four items, postage is free. There are always things we need/use...toothpaste, snack items, pasta sauce etc. I have never actually paid postage.

AutumnRose1 · 27/02/2020 18:43

so postage is always free if you buy 4 items? I've never used it but that's partly because I thought I had to fill up some kind of....bag. I dunno. I can't remember how they phrase it.

fedup21 · 27/02/2020 19:07

Ah- it isn’t any 4 items-they have to be from their chosen list?

CynthiaRothrock · 28/02/2020 07:04

Thanks for the replies. I guess it Must depend on what you buy really. Alot of the things we get, from what I can see, would be cheaper for me to just buy more of In store. I was mainly looking at snack things such as crisps and biscuits, dog food etc.

I think it's supposed to be convenient, rather than cheap. You select a list of items and they just turn up at your door at a set frequency without you having to think more about it.

Might be cheaper than shopping at somewhere like Waitrose or Sainsburys and buying a set list of items, but will look expensive if you're used to shopping around from Asda, Aldi or Home Bargains etc.

What puts me off is that prices seem to fluctuate. Some things occasionally seem cheap but then you look again and the item has gone up quite a bit and suddenly isn't. I don't know if there is any control over the price, eg I'll have 2 of X per month, but only if the price is Y or less?

BarbaraofSeville · 28/02/2020 08:47

If you want to save on online shopping of crisps, biscuits and dog food, you might be better looking at Zooplus and Approved Food.

Amazon have done a great job of convincing us that they are always cheapest and they are for a lot of things, but it's not always the case, so best to check prices from a range of suppliers.

Supermarket online shopping and delivery is much worse in the US, and Amazon massively out compete them (and sometimes partner with stores). So in NY I use Amazon Pantry to order from WholeFoods and they deliver inside 2 hours. It's pretty great tbh, and no more expensive than anything else - all food is expensive in NY, which is why you may as well eat out tbh!

In the UK, though, I can't see the point of using them. Ocado etc are much better.

olivo · 28/02/2020 19:14

I live in the Channe Islands where we don't have cheap supermarkets such as Tesco etc so it is massively cheaper. Yes the 4 items have to be from a specific set of things but there are always plenty that we use. We have the benefit of the Vat being taken off many items too. Win win!
