Anyone watched it? What are your opinions on the outcome of the case of son throwing mum over a balcony? I have to admit I was torn, he clearly confessed to murder. But the verdict of a suspended sentence? I’m a bit confused after seeing his pain at his mums illness and death, but also the CCTV of her demise. I do think he should have been convicted of murder though as he did do it AIBU? There’s obviously more factors in this case like euthanasia but still...he threw her off a balcony...

I watched it.
I also think he should have been convicted of her murder, he admitted it. He planned to kill her.
My mum had dementia for 10 years. It's awful to watch someone you love suffer from dementia BUT no way would I ever have done that to her.

Toomanygerbils · 27/02/2020 03:12

I did think under the circumstances he should get a reduced sentence with some counselling. However to read after the sentence he did get his mums money from her house and will made me feel sickened.

I wondered if he would get the money.

If he really wanted to end her suffering there was others ways to do it. I thought it was awful what he done.

He did get the money, as I said I’m torn. I don’t think he’s a risk to the public, and if his mum had been well I don’t think he’d of hurt her. But ultimately he made a premeditated decision and is wasn’t a nice one. Whether it was because it made his or her life/death better I suppose we won’t ever know

The verdict was guilty, the sentence was custodial but suspended. He had an accepted mitigation under the relevant commonlaw

HeronLanyon · 27/02/2020 07:01

He had spent 9 months in custody awaiting trial. The equivalent of an 18 month sentence.
There will have been medical/psych reports to help the sentencing judge.

Sentencing judge will also have presided over the trial and heard all evidence. Evidence will have included anything available and admissible about motive and the jury who heard and deliberated found him not guilty.

I thought this case was dealt with so quickly after so long on the Southend case that it was harder to understand and accept the sentence at first blush. Until I thought through the above.

FizzyIce · 27/02/2020 07:05

Dh and I were both shocked he walked free.
Yes he had been on remand for 7 months but what he did was premeditated and was also bloody horrific .
He couldn’t put a pillow over her face but quite happily carried her like a child and threw her off a balcony ? Ok then ..

HeronLanyon · 27/02/2020 07:14

Sorry should have added that he was found not guilty of murder. He will have indicated a guilty plea to manslaughter (he did plead guilty to this) and will have had full credit for that guilty plea. Can only assume the reports and evidence will have been that he was without intent/reckless (legal definition of reckless) required for murder due to diminished responsibility/mental health situation rendering culpability low etc.
We just can’t properly judge it without having sat through the evidence/read the pre sentence reports etc.
Am I the only one who couldn’t watch the cctv ?

FizzyIce · 27/02/2020 07:33

I understand the logistics of it but watching as a member of the public is just shocking that he technically walked out a free man AND got the money

HeronLanyon · 27/02/2020 07:43

Working backwards we know she was receiving palliative care - I wonder if this played a part in the evidence in discounting money being any kind of possible motive - Possibly as he himself said quite the opposite. Now traipsing into speculation but I wonder.
Lost my lovely old ma recently - thank god not involving any loss of indépendance/faculties etc. So often think what we didn’t have to deal with. It’s tough. Was a shocking case. Just as the officer said.
Really great series although it took a while to become used to the soundtrack and split screens etc.

Toomanygerbils · 28/02/2020 02:42

Agree it was a difficult case, and no one will ever know what went through his mind other than him. I think that’s what made it so hard to watch, feeling a mixture of disgust and sympathy at once is quite a unique one!

What did you think of the previous murder of Courtney? Kelly seems pretty emotional and her partner thought he was clever turning someone else in. I wonder since they had no DNA or murder weapon if they would have gotten away with it, if he hadn’t made a statement blaming the other bloke?

Just finished watching this. Looking forward to next week. If that's the right feeling?
