Skincare AIBU?

So I'm currently breastfeeding. I have obviously watched my diet and what I consume during pregnancy and while feeding my baby. While pregnant I was careful with what I put on my skin as I know you can be more prone to allergies.

Anyway I just read an article saying breastfeeding mothers should be careful of what they use skincare wise?! AIBU to have never heard or been told about this before? I've never thought to check skincare ingredients as it's for my face (I don't rub anything into my breasts). I'm now feeling a bit paranoid and worried I need to check all my skin care regime! I use Emma hardie mainly and I'll be gutted if I have to stop as it's what keeps me looking less zombie like but I'll be horrified if I've endangered my baby!

Before anyone asks...yes first baby 🤦🏻‍♀️

I suspect they were referring to retinols and perhaps other "actives", but unless you can link to article, not sure. Look up Caroline Hirons and see what she mentions on her site. Or, just google breast-feeding + skincare. Pretty sure it's retinol.

So I do need to be careful?

I'm trying to rack my brain now about what I've put on my face in the last few months 🤦🏻‍♀️ Why does no one tell you about this?!

as an aside, breast milk is apparently brilliant as a skin cleanser if you're really stuck for an alternative.

Caroline Hirons - retinol Q&A

Calm down a bit. Stop beating yourself up and panicking. It’ll likely be similar to the restrictions during pregnancy, like a PP said about Vitamin A (retinol) etc.

If you’re prone to allergies your skin likely wouldn’t tolerate anything deemed to be ‘potentially harmful’ to your feeding child. And if it was, the quantity that would permeate your dermal layers and eventually permeate your breast milk would be probably untraceable. I’m basing this on things I’ve read for pregnancy.

Don’t worry, have a read and carry on x
