Do or do not drink while you have a vomiting bug?

DuploTower · 26/02/2020 16:50

AIBU to find conflicting advice confusing? Some websites say do not drink until several hours after vomiting, others say drink plenty.

I've tried drinking it just comes back up and increases discomfort. But I'm so thirsty.

What do you do?

Please drink! Oh my goodness! It's so important. The most dangerous thing of a bug is dehydration. Even if you're throwing it up, little bits will be getting absorbed. Ice lollies are good if you can't face an actual drink, and often stay down better. I always crave cold Sprite when I'm ill.

dottiedodah · 26/02/2020 17:37

Tiny sips of weak lemon squash works well for me ,Hope you soon feel better OP .Nothing worse IMO .When you do feel up to eating once more try BRAT diet Bananas,Rice .Apple Sauce and Toast(obv not all together!)

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 26/02/2020 20:24

Fine-grated raw apple (so it's a mush) is a stomach settler.

Waveysnail · 26/02/2020 20:25

I was told small sips every so often or suck on ice for 24 hours after last vomit

flooredbored · 26/02/2020 20:31

Apple juice diluted with water is my go to sickness bug beverage!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 26/02/2020 20:33

I came on thinking it was about a glass of wine Grin

If it's about a sickness bug and water then think a good idea is to chew on ice chips-easy to digest-slightly slower than drinking

QuestionableMouse · 26/02/2020 20:42

I drink cold red coke when I have a migraine because its the only thing that settles my stomach.

theSnuffster · 26/02/2020 20:46

Small regular sips of whatever you can stomach. Or ice lollies/ ice cubes. I used to find flat lemonade or cola sometimes stayed down better than water.

WrongKindOfFace · 26/02/2020 20:48

Little and often is best. Hope you feel better soon.

Toybox88 · 26/02/2020 20:53

You should sip flat 7 up. Can't believe nobody suggested that. That's always the drink for illnesses where I'm from.
Oh make sure it's the sugary one. Not sugar free.

nearlynermal · 26/02/2020 21:01

You definitely need fluids, and you need to replace lost electrolytes (hence what op was saying about salt and sugar.) Very diluted apple or grape juice is good for rehydration. But water is fine.

TitchyP · 26/02/2020 21:04

I'm not sure that sucking marbles or pebbles is a good idea!

Kaykay066 · 26/02/2020 21:05

With children on the ward I work in (and I give same advice for adults) is juice usually diluting with some sugar in it 5ml every 5 mins. Does help with some but others do need iv fluids depends how they cope.

Mil currently has the bug is doing this and my 14 year old too, he’s stubborn though and wouldn’t drink much just wanted to sleep. Hoping my wee ones don’t catch it or me 😬. Def sips not glasses at a time

roseelizabeth · 26/02/2020 21:09

I used to work at 111 and the advice there is sips of either flat full fat coke or lemonade. Not water as it'll come back up. Hope you feel better soon.

IHeartKingThistle · 26/02/2020 21:12

Sip water. I had norovirus last year and couldn't keep water down so I didn't drink. Vomited all night and basically lost my mind. Thought I shouldn't wake DH up as he had work so stayed downstairs.

DH found me on the floor in the morning with no control over my bodily functions, still vomiting. Paramedics took me to hospital where I needed 5 bags of fluids.

I do have a sensitive stomach anyway but it was scary. Little sips!

eaglejulesk · 26/02/2020 21:19

I always sip ginger ale, that seems to help.

chesterfuckingdrorrs · 26/02/2020 21:21

Tiny tiny sips and don't have the water too cold. You will be absorbing some of the water you take in even if it doesn't feel like it. I prefer flat lemonade or coke (full fat) just to stave off the dehydration headache.

HulaHoop2012 · 26/02/2020 21:26

Toybox88 I was going to suggest 7Up, it cures all.

I had the most horrific food poisoning last year and 7Up was all I could drink. Literally tiny sips.

I hope you feel better soon op.

CalmdownJanet · 26/02/2020 21:46

Toybox are you Irish? I was coming on to suggest flat 7up too, it's been curing sick people here for years Grin

DuploTower · 26/02/2020 22:02

I don't have any diluting juice and only cans of Pepsi Max. I ate half an apple though and I haven't been sick since, and I've even been for a pee though I can feel a bout of cystitis starting to niggle. I think I've turned the corner though. Thanks guys, I think I'm gonna keep a can of fizzy juice at the back of the cupboard for emergencies like this.

Hope you and the wee ones escape it kay kay.

Thistle King that sounds terrifying, I'm glad you were OK.

Try some toast and black tea with sugar in tomorrow. That is what I have once I've stopped being I'll perksme right up

darktriad · 26/02/2020 22:24

I am emetophobic so I need a bug to be gone fast for the sake of my mental health

Consequently, I would not let a single morsel of food or water pass my lips when in the throws of a bug.

This means the bug passes really quickly and the most I have ever thrown up is twice

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 26/02/2020 23:12

A GP once said flat coke is best as its basically the equivalent of drinking dioralyte, it replaces your electrolytes and stops your blood sugar dropping too low but I always think its a vile thing to bring back up, brown, stringy and acidic so I stick to small sips of water.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 27/02/2020 17:17

@GenuineKlatchianPottery
@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime
Both of these suggestions were common 40 years ago but now totally out of date. It is unlikely that you will need salt and sugar replacement.
The old one about flat lemonade/flat coke is now considered risky as it can upset your electrolyte balance, just stick to sips of water

halcyondays · 27/02/2020 17:22

Take small sips, don’t have too much at once. You need to have something to keep hydrated.

I thought you meant alcohol and wondered how anyone could possibly feel like it when ill with a bug!
