I'm not a prepper. I'm not an alarmist. But AIBU to be considering a small stockpile or supplies because of Corona?

I've never done so in my life.

I usually have a wee snort at the preppers board when it pops up in general convos (sorry guys, no offence)

But reading about the Italian villages that have been put on lock down and families can't leave their homes has got me thinking...

Italy isn't a million miles away. Its not a 3rd world country. If its happened there...

Maybe just some bottles of water and some tinned goods? Medicines?

Am I going mad?

Just the more I read about the more sensible it seems. Even if it's not a case of being officially quarantined then it might be a good idea as it goes on not to have to go shopping as often as I do now?

Argh I don't know!

My DH is definitely in the 'it will be alright' mindset for nearly everything imaginable. Today I asked him to pick up some paracetamol as I want to be sure we have everything we need if we're quarantined. Nearly fell off my chair when the answer was - 'Sure - how much do you want me to get?'

Went to 2 Boots to get hand sanitizer, both sold out. Thankfully Superdrug still had some stock. So we aren't the only ones!

The baked ham is a good idea. Will do that tomorrow.

I realised, reading this thread, that so much of what we have in our house is based on either electricity and/or wireless communication. So this has prompted me to buy some batteries for an old CD/radio that we have!

My cupboards and fridge/freezer are reasonably well stocked - but if we lose electricity for any length of time, there's clearly going to be an issue with stuff in the freezer. And we won't be able to cook as we don't have gas!

So I'm making sure that we have enough loo roll, cat food, gin and tonic.

Pipandmum · 26/02/2020 15:44

I bet most people could live for a week in what they have in their cupboards.

TW2013 · 26/02/2020 15:52

Do remember that some people would love to have a week or two spare food in the cupboard and drop some extra food out for the food bank.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 26/02/2020 15:57

My preparation is my topping up the Brexit cupboard with some meds and wine.

Justaboy · 26/02/2020 16:11

Can't really see flat dwellers having their own generating plant!
Exhaust Fumes arent that good for you several have died over time with that issue.

Hey ho! back in the three day week day's I got a steam engine driving a dynamo all DC mind but it could run most all of the house load inc Two cooker rings, TV all the lights, it just needed a stoke up to keep the steam pressure up!

Happy days:)

FelicityFebruary · 26/02/2020 16:33

Polanski I think you might be surprised.

FelicityFebruary · 26/02/2020 16:37

I was replying to Pipandmum ! Autocorrect is truly bizarre.

BIWI · 26/02/2020 16:44

Think I might also buy some charcoal - we could always barbecue if no electricity!

hazelnutlatte · 26/02/2020 16:52

We used up our brexit stockpile as we were moving house. Two days after moving we got stranded due to flooding in the village - wish we had kept some! Will definitley be stocking up again as soon as the Tesco delivery man can get to me again!

MarshaBradyo · 26/02/2020 16:53

I was just thinking of what I’d do and thought about lighting a fire but bbq makes more sense 😂

bellinisurge · 26/02/2020 17:09

We had all this "people have probably got a week's worth in their cupboard " arguments last year.

  1. I challenge you to live entirely out of your cupboards for breakfast, dinner and tea (I'm Northern, live with the words Grin) for one week.
  2. Some people don't have a lot of money for food.
FelicityFebruary · 26/02/2020 17:18

I'm just a out to go make the tea now Bellini.

Nice to see a fellow Northerner!

happycamper11 · 26/02/2020 17:19

I had £29 this week for our weekly shop (family of 3) and I don't have a freezer or much cupboard space so no, no stockpiling here!

Justaboy · 26/02/2020 17:35

I had £29 this week for our weekly shop

How the hell do you manage on that?.

vhs95 · 26/02/2020 17:49

I love this thread. Keep it coming! Grin

Funkycats · 26/02/2020 18:02

@TW2013 I do exactly that. If people who can stockpile a bit, do so, there will also potentially be a bit more on the shelves.
I've been in the position of needing a food bank in the pre food bank days. Luckily a good friend helped me out, but I've never forgotten that time
Hopefully this will all come to naught and some better off posters can donate stockpiled food.

Strictly1972 · 26/02/2020 18:23

I did a check on our cupboards today & actually they are quite well stocked. However I have purchased extras of a couple of bits that we will use up at some point anyway just to be sure. DH will think I’m a bit bonkers but he does anyway

SuperFurryDoggy · 26/02/2020 18:27

Very sensible!

happycamper11 · 26/02/2020 18:31

@Justaboy it's not hard - one meat purchase a week which I make something that I can incorporate in to other cheap meals such as this week jerk chicken with rice and we'll have chicken pasta bake tomorrow. Rest of meals will be veggie though there are a couple of tins of tuna and a tin of mackerel already in the cupboard and I have a good range of spices. I'm surprised you think you can't eat for a week on that amount if there are a few basics already in your cupboard/fridge

Knowhowufeel2 · 26/02/2020 19:23

I've always kept a few months supply of food in and rotate it as required.

The best tip I can give is to only buy things you'll actually use, otherwise you're just creating waste.

I keep tinned tomatoes, baked beans, butter beans, kidney beans, soups, coconut milk, some tinned fruit, jam, honey, custard, some convenience jars of pasta, etc, sauces, pasta, lentils, dried peas, flour, noodles, rice, ketchup, tea, coffee, sugar, hot chocolate, pet food, toilet paper, etc, in.

I also include coffee whitener and dried milk as a substitute for UHT/ fresh as it has a much longer shelf life. I do also keep 5 litres of UHT milk in as well as tetrapak orange and apple juice (6 pack of each). My friends think I'm better stocked than some shops 😆

It's useful for me because I have health issues so can't always get to the shops, and it's now a habit.

I'm actually running my freezers, stores, etc, down at the moment and am stocking up again as needed.

Knowhowufeel2 · 26/02/2020 19:30

I also have corned beef, spam and bacon grill, all of which I'd use anyway, but they're good to have in

Blobbyweeble · 26/02/2020 19:36

We could probably live on the contents of our freezer and cupboards for about a month but we are all adults and could do with loosing weight! I might stock up on dog food though. They would happily eat anything but the resulting farts would probably kill us.

Carriemac · 26/02/2020 19:57

This thread has been really thought provoking- have ordered big online shop for tomorrow with non pershibles and matches , firelighters etc

Lightningpanda · 28/04/2020 15:26

Hi, I noticed that most people are stocking up on food supplies. Is anyone thinking ahead for things to help in possible heatwaves or possible long term internet problems? I know these are probably odd things to be considering but as I've covered my food supplies and back ups for a power cut it made me think...'What else could go wrong?' I tried and failed to get fans last year as everywhere had sold out so I would like to be prepared this summer for uncomfortably hot weather by thinking ahead this time. I have been having intermittent internet problems due to high usage with everyone being at home, and realised I use the internet for the most basic things that I don't know what I would do if it when down for days. I get all my recipes and gardening instructions, first aid advice etc from the internet when I need it. I realised that I don't tend to learn about something new until exactly when I need to know it by. For example I can't sew, needed to make a mask so I googled it, don't know how to make bread so I googled it. I have been buying a lot of books so I have the info there just in case.
