In school, the kids in ds class are 5 and 6.

About a month ago, he came home talking about the titanic. His teacher had been reading them a book about it, how it crashed, sunk and people died. He read the book over a few weeks.
Other parents also confirmed this as their children had told them the same.

Today the teacher has been telling them about the fires in Australia and how 'lots of people are in danger from big fires and could die'.

I wouldn't bring it up with the teacher, I'm not about to go marching into the school. I'm just wondering would others agree that it's odd to tell 5 year olds about these kind of things?

Odd to tell 5 and 6 year olds about a 110 year old shipwreck? Not in my book, OP.

HannaJoy · 25/02/2020 20:15

No nothing odd about either of those things. Facts is facts.

How else are they gonna learn stuff if not from the teachers at school?
My 5yo also learnt about this stuff this year. He also brought home a reading book about the titanic. He was pragmatic about it but I think he didn't really comprehend that people died.

Thanks for the replies, I just thought it was odd to tell 5 year olds about lots of people dying/possibly dying, it's the kind of thing ds would worry about if he woke up during the night.

Those 2 things in isolation seem rather death - heavy.

Do they need to know at that age? Do they understand? My children aren't that old yet so I'm not sure.

But there are always going to be some students who worry disproportionately about these things. It’s no different in secondary, tbh.
