To ask about probation period

Scousebird26 · 25/02/2020 20:00

Hi!
I started a new job 2 months ago (which I enjoy) and I am working 3 months probationary period before I get a permanent contract.
I realise I have a month to work but aibu to ask about getting a full time contract as I don’t really want to be left without a job as there is only me and my son and have no other financial help.
Don’t know if I’m being cheeky or not by asking already.
Thankyou xx

Do you have any wise older colleagues you could confide in? You could ask what has gone on in the past. They may be able to tell you the lie of the land, and might put in a good word for you?

It's normal to have probationary reviews within the probation period. Have you had these? This then allows for any performance issues or other things to be addressed during the period. Rather than just at the end when you don't have a chance to do anything.

What type of job / sector is it?

Scousebird26 · 25/02/2020 20:06

Thank you for replying!
No I’ve had no performance reviews at all so I don’t even know how they think I’m doing. Don’t think I could ask a colleague as it’s a strange working environment so I think that’s out the question.

It’s advertising.

Call a meeting with your manager and ask for feedback on your performance so far. Depending on what they say, ask whether its looking likely that your contract is extended.
If you're a temp to perm position, then the perm position needs to be available (and the project not be finishdd/cancelled /outsourced) and your performance is irrelevant as the project doesn't exist anymore.
If its probation before confirmed employment then that would be based on performance, and call the meeting.

I think I will call a meeting, Thankyou for your advice x

Legally, they should be issuing you a contract in your first 2 months of employment.

That doesn't affect your probation but it does give you written confirmation of terms of employment.

FWIW OP, I don’t think it makes any difference at all.

Even a permanent contract would usually contain a probationary period clause that allows them to terminate your employment on around a week’s notice anyway. Plus, they can let you go within the first two years for any reason they want (aside from discriminatory or other limited statutory right issues).

For future reference, the best way to get a degree of security is to negotiate for a longer notice period - I’m quite senior but managed to negotiate six months notice to buy some time in the event of redundancy or similar.
