I'm getting married. The hairdresser wants a deposit to save the date. I've never met them. Is this normal. Aibu yes yanbu.

Meeting them first and paying for a trial is the norm - then if you like them/the 'do', then give them a deposit for the day.

undomesticgodde55 · 25/02/2020 15:35

I would expect to pay a deposit for a wedding if she was coming to the venue as they wouldn't be able to see any other clients that day. Is she coming to the venue or is it abnormal appointment in a salon?

undomesticgodde55 · 25/02/2020 15:35
  • a normal not abnormal Blush
LagunaBubbles · 25/02/2020 15:36

Why would you use a hairdresser you've never met for such an important day? But yes a deposit is totally normal, they will need to give up a big part of their day (and therefore turn down other potential clients)

LagunaBubbles · 25/02/2020 15:37

A trial is normal to I should have said.

Shoxfordian · 25/02/2020 15:40

Yeah its normal to pay a deposit

ArtemisOfOrtygia · 25/02/2020 15:42

Well, yeah, if you have accepted her service and she's going to book you into her calendar, it's normal. If she's asking for a deposit just to see you for a trial, but you haven't agreed to her doing your hair on your big day, no, that's not okay.

user1493413286 · 25/02/2020 15:44

Yes it’s normal

Yabadee · 25/02/2020 15:46

Yeah, normal. Paid mine a deposit for my wedding July next year. She always does my hair though so I know she’s good

Lazypuppy · 25/02/2020 15:47

Why would you use a hairdresser you've never met? Surely pay for a trial then pay a deposit for the day if you like them??

Ouchaheadinmybehind · 25/02/2020 15:51

Normal to pay a deposit but do book a trial too.

catmumof1 · 25/02/2020 16:45

Trial then deposit normally, unless it's a destination wedding in which case you'll have to pay the deposit in advance.
Although if it's a really popular hairdresser and your date is in demand it wouldn't be unreasonable of them to ask for a deposit to secure your date but they should have a policy to refund you if you don't want to go ahead with them.

RedRedWines · 25/02/2020 16:51

If you're not paying for a trial of course its normal. How else would they be able to guarantee that date for you without some security?

Bookworm33 · 25/02/2020 17:30

Because I need a moblie hair dresser. All the dates are booked up with other ones. This is the only one available without having to go to a salon. I don't know if I should just pay. Or miss out and have to do my own hair.

Why are you so reluctant to pay a deposit?

Likethebattle · 25/02/2020 17:32

She’s pencilling that time out for you and can’t take other clients, if you cancel last minute she loses income. I paid a deposit for both hair and make up. I actually didn’t get a chance to have a trial but had loads of contact discussing looks and colours etc. The two girls cake as a team, one did hair and one did make up and they were recommended by the venue. Two weeks before my wedding I saw the be of their brides on Facebook and wrote them a message to say’this is what I want’. They were excellent.

bridgetreilly · 25/02/2020 17:34

Well, why don't you arrange a trial with her and then decide if you want to book her and pay the deposit?

Bookworm33 · 25/02/2020 17:36

I don't mind paying deposit. I have never met in real life. I didn't know if that was normal as I've never had to do this before.

Nanny0gg · 25/02/2020 17:44

It's normal but you do need a trial

TheCakeCrusader · 25/02/2020 17:46

I would do the trial first to see whether you like the finished style and to see how you get on with the hairdresser. If happy, then put down a deposit. It’s quite standard practice to put a deposit down to ‘save the date’. The hairdresser doesn’t want to lose business should you change your mind and a deposit ensures that he won’t take another booking on that date either.
