A Certificate for...... 'Good Sneezing'

FFS.

Friends DS (7) came home from school yesterday with a certificate. It was for 'Good Sneezing'. When his mum asked him what was good about his sneeze he said it was because he remembered to cover his mouth. For about a second I thought maybe they were being hyper-vigilant ridiculous in light of Corona, but the mum told me his sister got a certificate for 'Brilliant Sitting' before half term because her back was straight and she didn't fidget in assembly.

My DC are young teens now and although I have vague memories of meaningless medals for 'participating', the flurry of certificates dished out these days seems mad.

I blame the ease with which one can be designed and spat out of a printer. Nobody had computers or printers when I was a child certificates were rare and precious - now you get one for fucking sneezing!

So AIBU to say STOP WITH THE ENDLESS CERTIFICATES?

When I was at senior school (in the early to mid 90s) I almost got a certificate for going to school for a week, but I bunked off the day I was to receive it so didn't get it. I remember a boy getting one for not smoking for a week too.

It wasn't the greatest school!

Mrsjayy · 25/02/2020 14:23

Ah Bless her Grin (somebody had to say it )

I think that is a good certificate shows she isn't sneezing &snotting everywhere, considering the coronsvirus is a real threat "good sneezing " is a great thing to teach children.

Whoops75 · 25/02/2020 14:29

Correct coughing and sneezing techniques are taught in school.
If they have learned it and used it where others haven’t then I say reward it.
The recipient feels good and the other children feel it’s something worth learning.

Win/Win

Him*

I work at a toddler group snot an d saliva is part and parcel might need to suggest good sneezing stickers to go with the washed hand stickers!

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

I'm still convinced that fella knew full well he had a shitty arse and went on there as a fetish thing. How can you not know?!

That thought has actually just made me Envy a little - you may (horribly) be on to something there.

Then again, I remember there was a 'feature' on The Wright Stuff a couple of years ago about a man who was into body building and had bulked himself up so much that he apparently was no longer dextrous enough to be able to reach around and wipe his bottom. There was also an item on the same day about leaf blowers, their environmental impact and whether or not they were a waste of time. I still remember Matthew's throwaway comment about Mr Beefcake: "You need to get yourself a leaf blower, Mate!" Grin Grin Grin

Nooooooooooo I get the importance of good hygeine, but that should. be taught, and praised, as 'standard'. Certificates are for 'exceptional'.

I remember my DC coming home from a holiday club that they had spent the day at. They both had two certificates each. One for 'attending', as in 'I'm a Koosa Kid' or whatever and one for 'being in the dance'. FUCK OFF and stop wasting paper.

You are really angry about this Grin

LOL DD once got a certificate for "Always Eating her Lunch". She was in ore school though.

DS is 7 now and his last certificate was for "Explaining fractions to the class" which seems a bit more sensible at that age!! I'd be quite surprised by a good sneezing certificate

faracrossthepond · 26/02/2020 09:31

@SlightlyJaded I am torn over this. On the one hand I think it's nice to reward kids for good/positive behaviour, but on the other hand, it's batshit that they are getting 'awards' and certificates for feck-all!!!

Trouble is, because schools make every child a 'winner' these days, young people don't know what it's like to lose, and fall apart/crack up when things don't go their way when they're older/a young adult.

And now we have a whole new generation of people born after the early 1990's who suffer anxiety, low self esteem and mental health issues, because they feel like they're failing at life when they don't win everything, and achieve everything they thought they would.

I know it may sound far fetched to some, and it sounds like a bit of a reach, but I think there's some truth in what I say.

BlessedAreTheCheesemakerz · 26/02/2020 09:33

Bloody ridiculous. Also a vile waste of resources. And... currently 88 people have voted and 24% think this is not unreasonable Confused. Give me strength.

Emmelina · 26/02/2020 09:37

I certificate is probably a little too far, but I’d happily dole out stickers to anyone practicing good hygiene. Everyone loves a good sticker (and I might not be on the verge of dying from ChildPlague 94.6% of the time!😂)

FlossieTeacakesFurCoat18 · 26/02/2020 09:38

I like the sneezing one, it will stick in the mind and they'll always remember to cover their noses / mouths... Unlike many adults!

HeartyGreenSalad · 26/02/2020 09:47

Bloody hell , as someone who has swallowed childrens spit with them not covering their mouth I think this is a good idea

NumbersStation · 26/02/2020 10:20

@BlessedAreTheCheesemakerz

I thought the OP was saying it was ridiculous/waste of resources too and therefore I voted Yanbu. I haven’t read it wrong have I? Blush

NumbersStation · 26/02/2020 10:21

Love your name by the way Smile

Hoppinggreen · 26/02/2020 11:32

My DD got one at preschool “for saying Thank You” and My Niece got one from Nursery for being “Happy and Go Lucky” apart from that not even being a thing she was the grumpiest most miserable child ever!

steff13 · 26/02/2020 11:34

Sneezing is one of my best skills. I want a certificate.

BlessedAreTheCheesemakerz · 26/02/2020 12:02

@NumbersStation - I think I got a bit overexcited with the negatives in that sentence, it was bound to cause confusion. Nope, you read it the same way as me for voting.

LuckyLickitung · 26/02/2020 12:24

The stars of the week etc get dished out in assembly at the end of each week, and each week I sit there knowing that it's Sod's Law that the one I miss will be when my DCs get chosen (I missed one in all of last year and guess what...)

One of the petty entertainments through this weekly ordeal is reading between the lines of the teachers' euphamisisms, that "Cuthburt's kind hands" mean he managed a week without decking someone etc... Grin

Sneezing sounds daft, but actually promoting good hygiene routines isn't something to be sniffed at Wink
