I worked as a waitress when I was younger, similar type of pubs and restaurants as this one. I thought I'd seen a messy table or two in my time, but this is gross!

I appreciate children make a mess. But why would any sane adult think this is acceptable?

Feel sorry for the staff.

"The ones that take the phrase ' is everything ok with your meal?' as an invitation to find fault or make a stupid comment. Just say fine and get on with it.
The most boggling one was the gammon was too salty."

Hmm if you're asked if your meal is ok and it's not, saying that it's not is perfectly fine. Some chefs over-salt dishes, it's a valid complaint. This isn't a home cooked meal that you should be grateful for and "just get on with it", you're paying for it: the staff are checking so that if there is a problem it can be rectified quickly rather than people complaining when they go to pay, or saying nothing and then writing a negative review online.

It'll take less than a minute and a half to clear that, no more. I wouldn't dream of leaving a table in that state, but c'mon, just clear it and move on, that's what you get paid for, there's shit in every job.

Unfortunately the Harvesters I have been in were always filthy. Unwiped tables, dirty cutlery or none at all available. Everything sticky. The floors were relatively clean compared to the tables and chairs though.

I was in a pub/restaurant last year where there was a table that resembled the one in the article, it wasn't a Harvester. We were seated by a window, next to me was a radiator covered in sauce, gravy and dust, the skirting board below was covered in grime and filth, and I assume someone had vomited because it stank.

Had already ordered drinks before being seated so paid and left. The mess was still on the table and floor as we passed on the way out. A Harvester would have been luxury compared to that.
