AIBU to not understand falling asleep by accident?

I know IABU but I can't seem to start a thread in chat. Anyway I have never in my life just "fallen asleep" e.g. on the couch, reading in bed etc. I have to decide to go to sleep and it takes a while. It's always a decision, it never just happens. I seem to be alone though based on all the people falling asleep all over the place! Anyone else like this or am I just wierd?

Well it's take me two nights and one morning to read this thread - as I keep falling asleep. Hence the big delay since the last post.

I sleep easily. I'm always sleeping on the sofa. Indeed, if I catnap each evening about 5pm then at least I stand a chance of staying awake till a decent bedtime hour.

I'm rarely awake for take off in a plane.

MrsStrangerThing · 27/02/2020 10:20

I am the same as you op. I really struggle to get to sleep, no matter how tired I am. I work a lot of nights and its killer because I really cannot sleep during the day, despite being exhausted.

Coulddowithanap · 27/02/2020 23:06

I wish I didn't randomly fall asleep. I've missed so many films. Quite sure I could fall asleep just about anywhere. I'd give anything to only go to sleep at bedtime.

I’ve Once fallen asleep mid conference call and had to feign technical difficulties when I woke up and realised it was several hours later. Luckily wasn’t caught. I have chronic insomnia in the night and can’t stay awake in the day which is a bloody nuisance, however I make sure I’m somewhere uncomfortable if I need to stay awake.

I've long suspected brushing your teeth is an anti-soporific. I can easily fall asleep any time anywhere except in my bed after brushing my teeth etc.

VanGoghsDog · 28/02/2020 00:04

I am very glad I can always fall asleep on the train to work. And I always wake up at the stop before the I've I need.
It's not 'by accident' though, I intend to do it.
And on planes I go to sleep after about ten minutes.

I'm a night owl so am always awake late so my train naps are my catch up.

DameHannahRelf · 28/02/2020 00:14

If I'm in a car too long, I start to nod off, every time. Or if I'm tired and try to watch something. I could probably sleep anywhere. I once fell asleep serving at a checkout, when I was a teenager (and had been partying hard all weekend).

DameHannahRelf · 28/02/2020 00:18

I'm a night owl too.

theflushedzebra · 28/02/2020 00:22

I have always been able to fall asleep anywhere.

Trains, cars, the sofa, the cinema, reading a book.

I once fell asleep in the middle of Notting Hill Carnival, friends & I had sat down on a tiny patch of grass around a bench, I lay down, and bam - sleep. Circa 1998. Alcohol would have been a factor though Grin

I drive my Dh to jealousy because I'm normally asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow. Unless I've an important day ahead of me, and make the mistake of thinking "I must get a good night's sleep!" Then I can't sleep.

DameHannahRelf · 28/02/2020 00:26

"How do they quieten the racing thoughts?!"

Lots of practice.

DameHannahRelf · 28/02/2020 00:26

*and sometimes exhaustion.

GymPossibilityFitness · 28/02/2020 00:37

I envy people who fall asleep quickly, my brain doesn't have that off switch

ALongHardWinter · 12/04/2020 19:38

I'm with you on this OP. I can't bloody well fall asleep easily when I want to,never mind by accident! It's so annoying. I have never been able to sleep in a car,on a train,a plane or coach. Even on a 15 hour coach journey that I did 20 years ago,I didn't sleep a wink. Everyone else was asleep. I was a complete wreck by the time we arrived at our destination!
This thread reminds me of one that was on here a few months ago, when the OP was asking if she was BU to take a half hour nap in the TOILET CUBICLE at work! Shock I was like 'What?! Can people actually do that?!'. I think my problem is that I can't sleep sitting up.

Pickupapenguinnnn · 12/04/2020 21:48

I can fall asleep anywhere. Not helpful when not at home! OP do you not nap?
