To take my old kitchen knives to the cops?

Cleared out the draw of failed utensils and have now 14 knives all sharp, various sizes.
I checked Google and as far as I can find you wrap the blade in cardboard etc and throw it in general waste, ours goes to landfill.
I don't like the idea of that at all firstly they could accidentally hurt someone, second they could be discovered by kids, thirdly resurface in ten years with my DNA all over them looking like a knife fetishist.
So.
I want to take them to the police station, put them in the amnesty bucket or summat.

My Ddad and DS think I'm being melodramatic and over thinking it. Plus there isn't a knife amnesty so won't be a bucket Hmm

AIBU and getting carried away?

My granny did this during a knife amnesty in the 1980s. The police drove her home in a car. I love to imagine them laughing and telling the story- she was very posh.

Cant you just resharpen them? I have knives that are 100 years old in daily use.

category12 · 23/02/2020 14:09

My knives are stabbed into the garden with the handles sticking out.

What did your garden ever do to deserve that? Grin

OP, why are you chucking knives anyway? They can been sharpened.

Gingernaut · 23/02/2020 14:09

Is there not an Amnesty Box?

Chewbecca · 23/02/2020 14:11

Why do you want rid of them anyway?

Southwestten · 23/02/2020 14:12

As a pp said, can’t they be sharpened?
A really sharp knife is a saviour to a cook.
If you don’t want them maybe someone else will.

RedWine123 · 23/02/2020 14:14

Knife banks - google one near you Smile

SpiltMilk100 · 23/02/2020 14:16

Yes because loads of kids hang around in the landfill digging for knives to go and commit crimes Hmm

TheQueef · 23/02/2020 14:16

I've got my favourites, these are all Disappointing knives.
Handle too light, handle coming apart, blade loose and nippy. Nothing anyone would want or need really.

Cheers for that Mildly that's exactly what I was looking for Smile

If they are in decent condition take them to a charity shop as they are, good kitchen knives will sell. If they are past their best take them to the local tip and no need to blunt them first.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 23/02/2020 14:18

I found a LARGE knife in my garden a few years ago. I spoke to our local beat officer and he said that there hadn’t been any recent incidents that would make it of interest and told me to wrap it in cardboard and put it in my general waste.

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/02/2020 14:19

When I cleared my dad's house I took his knives to a charity shop. I asked first as I wasn't sure they would taken them but they did.

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 23/02/2020 14:19

I had to dispose of an old knife a while ago (the wooden handle had broken and the blade was worn quite thin ). I taped cardboard around the blade and put it in the metal recycling bin. If there was a police station within 20 miles of me that wasn't only open every 2nd Thursday and only then if the moon is in Aquarius, I'd have asked there. Asking how to safely dispose of a potential weapon is perfectly sensible.

Aridane · 23/02/2020 14:24

Bless you, OP, that is a very sweet if slightly daft question

@MildlyMiserable response is very helpful

For those not clicking on the link she posted

Q644: I want to dispose of some kitchen knives can you tell me how to do this safely?
You can put the knives in your bin. It is advisable to ensure that they are packaged securely so as not to cause injury to any persons.

With the introduction of wheelie bins everything is done by machine so that likelihood of injury has been vastly reduced. However it is still advisable to package the knives securely just in case.

All metal knives can be taken to your local waste disposal site where there will be a skip for scrap metal.

Do you live in a rough area where kids to through the bins? If so then your police station will have an amnesty bin you can chuck them into. If not the wrapping in cardboard and putting in your bin on collection day will be fine.

ListeningQuietly · 23/02/2020 14:28

Give them to a homeless charity so that those who cannot afford to buy new stuff are able to cook.

Maryann1975 · 23/02/2020 14:30

My knives are stabbed into the garden with the handles sticking out. I didn't know how to dispose of them

WTF! presumably you’ve buried the handles? How far down have you buried them? What if a child or an animal digs in your garden and injures themselves on a knife they accidentally discover? And I assume you won’t be digging up your old knives when you leave the property, so the next owners may well injure themselves when they decide to plant something/do some garden renovations etc - no one would be expecting to find a knife in the soil, so wouldn’t be being Overly careful with what they are doing. Please dig them up and dispose of them responsibly.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/02/2020 14:31

Put them in the metal skip at the tip. Metal has sharp edges anyway, so no-one's going to be rooting through it, or they shouldn't be.

Shearsmith · 23/02/2020 14:31

When I had an old set of knives to throw out I bound them together with tape, wrapped a couple of tea towels over the blades and taped it on and then cut a 2 litre plastic bottle in half, put them inside and taped it back together before I put it in the general waste bin. That was a suggestion I found on Google. It worked really well.

Herpesfreesince03 · 23/02/2020 14:37

Dear lord. Just put them in the bin ffs 🙄 do you honestly think a criminals first port of call would be the dumpster when they’re planning a violent crime, with the intention of digging through millions on tonnes of festering rubbish just on the off chance they come across a discarded kitchen knife that they can then use to stab someone and frame the person who threw it away?? 😂😂

Herpesfreesince03 · 23/02/2020 14:38

@ListeningQuietly I’m pretty sure most charities have rules about arming the homeless...

Oh do give over.
If people moving into a new place are no longer allowed kitchen knives
the country has gone truly bonkers

40 years ago every little boy carried a knife to school
I still carry one in my briefcase at work
it has a screwdriver and a corkscrew and scissors and a tool for getting boy scouts out of horses hooves

PointlessAddict · 23/02/2020 14:52

I don’t think the OP’s question is that silly but stabbing them into the garden is frankly odd!

GoddessArtemis · 23/02/2020 14:55

I don't understand the level of sarcasm or piss taking TheQueef is getting. OP my local recycling centre says to wrap them separately and hand them over to someone that works there. I've done it as I used to volunteer at a charity shop and they weren't allowed to sell them, I would wrap and box them up and take them there myself. I once took over 40 carving knives in, can't imagine putting them in a wheelie bin.

womaninblue · 23/02/2020 14:57

I'm not laughing at you, OP. I've cleared out two kitchens now when elderly relatives have gone into care homes and I've got a cardboard box with loads of kitchen knives and carving knives in the garage because I wasn't sure what to do with them. I tried a charity shop but they didn't want them. Most have plastic handles so I assumed I couldn't recycle in the metals section of the local dump. I recently dropped and broke the tip of my best, most expensive chef's knife and unless I can find someone who can fix it for me that'll be joining the collection in the garage.
