Was a teacher.....now retraining in NHS job. Really want to do this job...got a 1st in the theory but omg the placement is tough!!

The workflow is far less than teaching but the way i get spoken to is crap. Some people just make me feel so nervous and then i make mistakes.

Im 41 and i feel like a 2 year old...
I will persevere but aibu to feel down that im working for feee and getting treated like shit.

Yup....
I've got 6months left
It's really really hard doing 3 x 12hr shifts per week, plus working weekends to cover all my bills, trying to stay awake and being motivated to write assignment's, trying to remember alllll the different medications and conditions, being spoken to like I'm an adolescent by qualified heath care professionals. And on top of it all I'm skint.

But there's a light at the end of the tunnel.
I'll have job security for the rest of my working life.

I'm a qualified nurse of almost ten years and was never treated like that luckily...just because you are untrained as yet doesn't mean you are worthless and need to be spoken to like that....it sounds like a toxic workplace and I would speak to your practice facilitator about it. Good luck and remember when you are qualified you will know damn well how it feels to be treated like nothing and will endeavour to make sure you practice nothing like that

I’m sorry to hear you are having a tough time. I was a teacher who retrained and qualified as a OT last July. I was never spoken to that way and my life and previous experience was really valued. However, most of my placements were community based.

I’m going to take a guess that your profession is hospital based? I think there can be a culture of of what you describe iust from the experiences of other course mates.

Stick with it, easier said than done I know! It will be worth it!
