To wonder if any of the 'new' Conservative voters in the flooded North/Wales are pissed off with Johnson yet?

Boris Johnson seems to be virtually invisible these days- refusing to be interviewed on the BBC, not answering journalists questions and not turning up immediately to show support for the flooded communities in Wales and northern England.

Just wondering how any of the new Tory voters from the old 'red wall' type communities are feeling now, and if anyone is regretting voting as they did?

but you can blame him for the lack of help and lack of prevention

Yes, absolutely, since Boris got his majority three and a half months ago he definitely should have produced several billion pounds to upgrade flood defences, and built them, whilst simultaneously dealing with Brexit, and you know, running the country.

100% guarantee if he had turned up folk would be moaning that he was too busy posing for pictures in flooded pubs when he should be dealing with Brexit.

There’s a lot to criticise Boris for, but this is laughable, and not a little patronising to suggest that those of us who are flooded would change our entire political views because he hasn’t turned up to sympathise with us in person.

Noconceptofnormal · 21/02/2020 20:12

I blame Brexit for the floods.

ilovesooty · 21/02/2020 20:49

I think it's disgusting that he doesn't seem interested in the flooding.

Waitingforadulthood · 21/02/2020 20:57

I am NOT a Tory voter. I live in south wales, and have spent the morning helping my sister try to salvage the upstairs furniture as she has been told by environmental health today that she can't continue to live in her upstairs because of the bacteria from the flooding downstairs (sewer water). I don't blame the torys for this. Wales is devolved and has been governed by welsh labour for decades. Her street flooded previously, and the council (labour run) did nothing to improve flood defences, despite clear knowledge of its necessity. They are entirely absent now in helping her find accommodation. Interestingly plaid ams are very present and Corbyn popped into ponty yesterday to show face. But it's the labour ko and labour run council who need to step up

lakeswimmer · 21/02/2020 21:00

I'm not a Tory voter but YABU. Government ministers turning up doesn't do anything useful in these situations when practical help is needed.

Loads of money has been spent on flood defences in my part of the country which has had serious flooding in recent years. There has also been stacks of time, money and effort spent locally on supporting individual households to be better prepared for floods and other emergencies.

Frazzled2207 · 21/02/2020 21:08

I don't blame him for the floods and don't think he'd be useful if he turned up.
That said it is quite interesting that In the run up the election he was happy to be photographed "mopping" Etc yet obviously can be bothered now.

I do think that the government have got a lot to answer for wrt inaction on climate change however. These floods are just going to keep coming.

Growingboys · 21/02/2020 21:09

OP you lost the election. Please get over it. This carping helps no-one. Go for a walk, or have sex, or eat some chocolate or something.

TabbyMumz · 21/02/2020 21:11

You do know that not all of Wales is flooded? Most of Wales is fine.

Absolutepowercorrupts · 21/02/2020 21:15

Jeremy Corbyn has been to Rhydyfelin, goodtwatman. Rhydyfelin is no where near North Wales, none of the flooded areas in Wales are in the North.
When you need to have a go at the current PM.
Get your facts right.

AnneElliott · 21/02/2020 21:17

I'm not sure that politicians turning up helps anyone.

I work for the civil service and i remember in 2010 that the police were thrilled when Theresa May didn't turn up at every major event like the previous Ministers as it let them get on with the job.

WarwickLife · 21/02/2020 21:17

@GrowingBoys your comment is simply rude, actually quite disgusting, and reveals your ignorance. People who support opposition parties don't have to "shut up". That's not how a democracy works.

DdraigGoch · 21/02/2020 21:27

or call an emergency meeting...
Yeah, that is how floods are stopped, meetings... Give me strength.

none of the flooded areas in Wales are in the North
Pretty sure that Llanrwst and St Asaph are in North Wales...

The last thing that workers on the ground need in a crisis are a load of bigwigs swanning around, getting in the way. Though, if you insist on a government response, surely it must come from the devolved government, no?

SilverySurfer · 21/02/2020 21:28

I'm so pleased to see Labour bots are still gainfully employed while their party is taking nearly four months to elect a leader.

Doubletrouble99 · 21/02/2020 21:34

This was discussed on Question Time last night. The environ minister was on. He said there had been meeting chaired by the PM to discuss the flooding and how best to help. He also said that in a previous bad flooding about ten times more houses had been flooded then there have been this time and the flooding is much worse this time. So there's no denying that defences have improved. The problem with some is that the multi million £ schemes are not finished so weren't fully operating. Prince Charles went to Wales today and quite a few people interviewed didn't see what the visit was supposed to have achieved.

Winterwoollies · 21/02/2020 22:12

Apparently Boris doesn’t much like turning up at Parliament either, and tends to only when he has to, like for PMQs. All hearsay of course, but from an interesting source...

TotesGodsWill · 21/02/2020 22:46

I mean yes it’s clear he doesn’t give a shit but really not sure what good he’d do turning up in the flooded communities for a photo op.

Both traditionally labour and traditionally conservative areas have been affected, it’s almost like the storms don’t care about politics funnily enough!

mrsBtheparker · 21/02/2020 23:04

He's absent at a time of crisis

I've never understood this attitude of 'the PM, the Queen etc' are not in attendance at natural disasters. Surely unless they have some professional expertise in flood clearance etc., then their attendance would be a distraction. I'm sure he's being kept up to date on what's happening and will visit when the people there have more time available. The Crown rehashed the criticism about HM not hot-footing it to Aberfan, I would think that if I were tring to rescue the children there the last thing I would want to do is it stop and meet HM!

I realise for some people everything's a policital football but they need to get real.

DippyAvocado · 21/02/2020 23:19

Tory voter Vic Haddock of flood-hit Ironbridge is none too impressed, although he has offered to buy Boris a pint if he shows his face.

TabbyMumz · 22/02/2020 10:05

Iron bridge is always flooded.

Clavinova · 22/02/2020 10:17

One of the latest comments in the link;

"This is the kind of thing that Sky or any media should've thought twice about going with. It baits the liberal & the left-leaning viewer to a kind of "Ha-Ha! Got what you deserved" mean-spiritedness that is just more poison in the body politic. But it gets clicks, I suppose"....

QuietCrotchgoblins · 22/02/2020 10:18

Wow, the expectations of our government seem at an all time low from these responses. Yes, you can't blame Boris personally for the flooding, but he is the prime minister of our country and should be present in a crisis. He doesn't seem to have a presence at all.

This is a problem thst will not go away. Climate change will bring more extreme weather events. I'd expect him to be bring up some future strategic planning.

Stripyhoglets1 · 22/02/2020 10:22

From what I've seen the Tory voters think it's reasonable he's not visited as he's too busy sorting out Brexit. I don't think he'd be much use there anyway. He'll not get much criticism from those who voted for him what ever he does/doesn't do.

tttigress · 22/02/2020 10:25

Has it never rained in Wales before this government?

Totally political post.

Livelovebehappy · 22/02/2020 10:28

Flooding appears to be pretty much the norm up here in the North these days during winter. We’ve had flooding to some degree every year for the last few years now, so I wouldn’t expect him to come running up here every time it happens. There has been money spent on flood defences, but unfortunately not all have been successful, plus work has been slow. The last thing our local town in mytholmroyd need at the moment is Boris and his entourage, plus the anti Tory hecklers taking their opportunity to attend, descending here and making an already difficult cleaning up job harder than what it is. Pointless.

ssd · 22/02/2020 10:33

It'll take more than the floods for new tory voters to wake up op. If they aren't personally affected by the flooding and the lack of help from the government, they don't really mind.

Give it time.
